Hey All

Well my laptop gave up the ghost on a recent trip of Tassie (half way through!) and I am now looking for another.

I am after something with enough oomph to run Oziexplore nicely and with a HD big enough for storing videos and piccies. A DVD R/W would be nice too!

Anyone in Melbourne have one they want to unload really cheaply (under $500) or know where I can get a good deal?!

Cheers

Angus :)

Hang in, save a couple more dollars, and hit Harvey Norman or Radio Rentals?, when they have a special on. A mate just picked up a Centrino powered machine with wireless network, USB, 15.4 inch LCD screen, 80 Gb HDD, etc, for just on a grand. I picked up an Acer AMD 2800, last year $998 on special, great machine.
Second hand laptop? Sorry mate, good luck.

Target do an ICOm one for about $800 which looked allright. You'd want to allow another $150 or so for more memory though I reckon

I once overheard a truckie and a truck salesman:-
Truckie- "I'm looking for a good cheap bogie drive prime mover".
Salesman- "The good ones are up the front, and the cheap ones are out the back".

My Toshiba from Dick Smith was $780 new a month ago - 1.6Ghz, 512mb RAM, inbuilt wireless network, 40gb hard drive, CD burner.DVD player, widescreen - for what it is, a great buy. Why risk second hand at that price.

Runs Oziexplorer great - apparently the HDD is shock mounted in the case.

There is always the resellers. This one is on ebay for $450.

We have just replaced our IBM T30s, the resellers are asking $539 with mouse and basic operating software.

Just be aware that P4m are battery hungry. You really want a
Centrino or Pentium M (the same)

I bought an IBM R40 1.4 Pentium M and that's a nice unit. Officeworks has sometimes $750 ones but you really want 512 MB RAM.

If you were in Sydney, I'd say go to the Sunday morning computer market at North Rocks Muirfield School. Two weeks ago, a friend bought a very good laptop quite cheaply and I bought an HP 17" flat screen LCD monitor in excellent condition (no lines through the pic) for $100. It has as big a screen as the 19" CRT monitor it replaced.

Last year i bought an ibm lappy of ebay from a local seller for $370 was 1gig 256 ram 20 gig hdd and came with 3 month warranty, was then offered a better Toshiba 1.6 P (M) 512 ram 60 gig hdd centrino dvd/cdrw etc for $500 so i sold the ibm back on ebay for $425 :D The guy i bought it from was pretty easy going and let me choose the best of the stock he had.
If you look at the Computer Trader website there is always some cheapies for sale there.

In that case, go for a "hardened Mil Spec" machine. I saw a video of a US Army laptop, it had been shot through the Windows Start button, by a crazy with an AK47.:( Still worked well, just could not turn it off.

Remember what Brian wrote. The good ones are out the front, the cheap ones are out the back.

That's the baby, Mick, I just couldn't remember off hand what she was. If an Arab with a Kalishnikov can't kill it, you can't. Get the Tough Book.
