I have been progressing my laptop GPS mouse system for the car - with help from various people here have oziexplorer scanned maps, download maps, UBD etc - works a treat. Actually oxiexplore using scanned maps od streets works better than the UBD system as oxiexplorer keeps you at the best position on the map to see what is coming up whereas the UBD system runs you right to the edge of the map before switching maps so for some of the time you youb cannot see very far ahead on thye map.
What would also be nice is to have a nice girlie voice saying turn left here, go down here, next left etc when I am driving though town etc. Can someone advise what software is out there that will turn my laptop with GPS mouse into a Tom Tom or Navman type system - also if there is, do I have to get specialist maps to go with the software = also any idea of costs.
thanks

Have a look at Travelmate, works as an add on for Ozi (although not 100% sure if it does what you want)

Travel Mate can give voice commands such as turn left. But you need to set up the route. It adds features to Oziexplorer that make this easy.
It can't decide a route for you like Tom Tom. This is because Oziexplorer uses raster maps and has no way to know where the roads are.

Have a look at FreeDrive
http://www.freedrive.co.uk/
Free to download but it uses Destinator Maps ... so if you can aquire the maps ... ;)
I've installed it on my tablet PC and it works very well with a bluetooth GPS reciever.

Another one that uses Destinator maps is a prog called Map Monkey.
Uncle Google will help you out with more info.

Tom Tom software exists and allows a PDA to be used as a GPS with a Receiver. You can get it from torrent sites. You can get different versions according your OS.

No, been down that road. Best bet would be freedrive if you can get the maps.

I noticed u can get a GPS module quite cheaply for a PsP. been looking at that option but the maps seem tricky to get, I have a PDA coming soon through work so might even explore the Tom Tom software option

PDA is a good option as you can use Ozi Explorer on it for ofroad use, i have Tomtom V6 and Ozi Ex and mpas covering all of vic on a 1gig sd card and a bluetooth gps with external antenna. Let me know if you want copies of the maps, i have compressed them for the pda down to 734mb from 1.6 gig.

Terrific, thanks. The PDA option is looking like the way to go. How does the tomtom software work if u have Ozi Ex installed, dont they do the same thing?

TomTom is good to enter an address or destination and it will give you voice directions how to get there etc, Ozi wont give directions but will show you on a map where you are and the route you are using. I use both to/from work and the TT just shows the actual roads you are using and Ozi will show the route you are on but on a larger scale so you can see a bigger picture and take an alternate route if you want.

No brand, they were produced by the GPS australia forum and passed around as a freebie, at 1:50000 they work quite well on my laptop and on my pda.

Are you happy with it in the scrub? How do you find the detail and quality. I've just been looking at the PDA that one of my staff use and it doesn't show Toolangi very well, but her maps are quite old at least 4 years old, although it does show Silvia Creek road and other unammed roads.
