Steering shimmy on Td5 110

Hi there,

Recentlyy bought a 2000 Td5 110 with about 100000km on it. Had a couple of minor things fixed, but I have a shimmy or wobble in the steering wheel when turning hard to the right (as when turning a corner or a U turn). Suggestions have been to put more air in the tyres (upped them from 40psi to 55), wheel alignment (had that done, made a slight improvement only) and most recently the mechanic (not a LR dealer but former LR mechanic) put some Nulon with teflon in the steering box. Box makes a slight whine when turning hard at slow speed. The idea is to see if the teflon builds up to make a smoother surface inside. This has not improved things greatly. Steering is fine in every other respect, especially after the wheel alignment. Grateful for any ideas.

if you jack up the front....and grab the wheels...one hand on each side and try wobble them...
is there any movement....?

then try and do the same holding it top and bottom.......


you are checking wheel bearings.....and tie rods...and also play in the pitman arm.......

also...check your lock stops havent come loose and arent doing their job.....


another test is to have someone shake the steering at a steady speed wheel left to right a bit.....
while you crawl underneath and check for movement in the steering gear...and radius arm bushes.....

if all is well....then it will either be the steering damper or the swivel hub preloads.......

but...methinks itll most likely be lockstops.......

Maybe swap the front wheels left to right and see if the problem is still there, in case its a tyre carcase problem.

ive had this problem for a while and am still trying to track it down, have new wheel bearings and tyres and wheel alignment, let me know if you come up with anything, oh and mine only does it turning right aswell.

I'd be looking at the shocks to see if one could be loose, the radius arms.

I had a similar steering wobble in the D2 a while back, turned out to be the bottom nut on the passenger side shock was loose.
