Hiya,
I'm after some advice/comment from real disco 3 owners. I was just about to purchase a used Disco 3 TDV6 S for 65k when a salesman proposed I take up the V6 SE offer for 64k on the road for a new vehicle. He's suggested this on the basis that:
The SE is better equipped than the S (fair enough).
3 year warranty on the new vehicle compared to 18 months remaining on the used TDV6 S.
That the break even point for diesel vs petrol was 7 years.
Now my question: What's the real world around-town economy of the V6?
The salesman said 15-17 L, the Landrover spec says 21L and a review I read said 15 L combined cycle.
Looking for to saome sage advice.
Cheers,
Mark

Dunno,
my figures for my TDV6 are 9l on the hwy, 10-12 around town and up to 16/17 in the soft stuff.
With the roofrack however, it's around 11-13 hwy/town.
There's only five here in town and there all TDV6.

We have the V6SE at work - 15l is about right - it gets nailed most of the time - does freeway and city work - little off road
personally i think for some weird reason i would look at the diesel - but thats me im a diesel man, the 63 start price is ok - way to steep for me but ok

Mick,
Thanks for that. I want the diesel too but 60k is my budget and I just can't find a TDV6 close to that. 7 seats and the air in the SE is attractive as is the 3 years warranty and if I look at it purely from an economics point of view, the petrol makes some sense.

Hi Mark, don’t go near the S, whether it be a diesel or petrol, the air suspension in the SE makes it a much better choice.
As to whether you get a V6 petrol or the TDV6 diesel is another subject and one that will bring lots of debate ( as it has before in a number of posts on this subject ) but I have a diesel RR and a V6 petrol D3, the D3 was primarily bought as a town car but has now done a few long trips.
The cost factor between the two is actually in favour of the petrol D3, even when taking into account the higher fuel consumption, because of the huge and in my opinion, unjustified price difference between the V6 and TDV6.
Price aside, the only disadvantage the petrol has on long trips is the shorter range because of the higher fuel consumption.
Around town, the petrol has heaps more grunt then the TDV6 D3 and our V6 D3 is quieter than our RR diesel.
Cheers

Thanks Tim. So any thoughts on whether the 64k on the road deal for the V6 SE is good?

As we paid $72k, a little over 12 months ago, I‘d guess and say it sounds good but do a bit of snooping before you sign on the dotted line.

get the S cause there is less to go wrong with the air suspension. havent you seen the reviews how the suspension suddenly dropped and they had to restart the vehicle to lift it again which is fine as long as it works but if you restart the vehicle and it doesnt work then your have no ground clearance to get home. Sorry anybody with air suspension i think its Great but its just a bit worrying how much could go wrong. also i would go the diesel

Spec... Go for the SE rather than the S as I think the residuals on the SE are going to be better than the S when it comes to selling it on.
As for engine, we don't get the V6 petrol over here. Out of the V8 & TDV6, my preference is the TDV6 as it's more efficient but the low down grunt suits my driving style more. I've driven the V8s but they need revving more to get them on song... Mind you, when you do rev them, they don't half go!!! ;)

And, if you want more grunt from the TDV6, put her into 'Sand' mode, then floor it a few times.
Sand mode gives you more power, but you need to drive harder for a short while so the car can 'adapt' to the new driving style.

Look, I'd kill for a TDV6 SE but I don't have 80 grand to splash around and to be honest, if I did I'd scrounge some more and go for a RR sport (and show off!).
I've read the reports on the air suspension but buying a new V6 alleviates that somewhat given the 3 year warranty.
Thanks for all the feed back. Hopefully I'll comeback in a week or so and brag about my new Disco, and then look for a LR owners club to join.
Cheers,
Mark

I guess we should all drive manual leaf sprung carby vehicles too! :p
Definately go the SE in what you can afford. The airbags are what the D3 is all about. If I could afford it I would go for the TDV6 onl because it is such an awsome motor with fantastic power and great economy.
I know a few people who have picked up TDV6 SE models at $73k drive away (brand new not demo). The trick is to ask for a TDV6 S model with the terrain Response added on. Most dealers will then offer you a TDV6 SE at almost the same price because they are easier to get.
While I have heard of people getting high 15's witht he D3 V6, I know a couple of people who when driving in surburban traffic to work everyday are getting around 21l/100km.

The 21/100km is scary! I drive from Brisbane southside to Albion everyday.

That "deal" on the petrol has been around for some time now. We were offered it back in December when we started looking at Discos. In the end I weighed it all up and paid about $80k on road for the diesel SE (with a few options.)
It's horses for courses, but remember that the fuel tank is only 82 litres and that's not much if you're running a petrol engine. So around town would be OK, but for touring you would need to make provision to carry extra fuel somehow.
For what it's worth, mine is using roughly 12l/110Km around town at the moment. On a run it doesn't change a lot as we have the full expedition roof rack, ARB 'roo bar, snorkel and side steps all doing their best to bugger up the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
But to sum it up, I'm glad I went for the SE (the air suspension is excellent) and happy with the decision to get the TDV6.
Just my 2 cents worth
Russ.

I had my P38A drop to the bump stops on a trip from Coffs Harbour to Sydney. I drove the remaining 500 km onn the bump stops as it was the middle of the night and there were no LR dealers between Coffs and Newcastle.
I must buy a Rovacom Lite!

Ok, it all depends on your right foot with the V6, I get 12l per 100km on the highway and 18l per 100km around town (SWMBO gets around the 20 mark around town, loves that right foot). If you like the right foot and dont hit the highway you will put it up too the 21l per 100 no dramas. When I towed the series 3 back, I got 24l per 100km;)
I have a V6 SE and it is a fantastic ride and I dont believe the extra 10k for a diesel is worth it personally, I dont think you will get the value back:twisted:

just filled up and the projected range in the work D3 with a full tank is 580 odd kays - but this does change

Only thing I think I can possibly meaningfully add here (being a pedestrian defender owner :p ) is it's one thing to say the extra purchase price diesel V petrol takes 7 years to re-coup. However, when you go to sell the vehicle you will usually get significantly more than the petrol, so you'll probably get a lot of it back.
When oil goes up again the difference might be that you'll still be able to sell the diesel as opposed to giving away the petrol. :o

Always comes back to $$$. TDV6 SE tastes on a V6 budget.
I'm actually commuting to melbourne at the moment - Mon-Wed there and Thu-Sun in Brisbane. For some reason there seems to be a lot more used Disco 3's down there so I might have a sniff around and see what I can get, and drive it back.
