What do defender owners do to create a bit more security for your vehicles?
alarms?
power switches?
steering locks?

Set them up as campers and tour the world. They cant get nicked if you sleep in them.
There was a thread recently with a deadbolt installed into the doors, I think a world tourer type thread. From memory it was supdboys thread.

Military fuel switch in the seatbox. Most lowlife scum would have no clue what it is.

I remember seeing in one of the UK magazines a cover that deadbolts over the pedal area making it impossible to use all 3 pedals.
Also MUDstuff has this little gem: Meck Lock (http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Meck_Lock.html)
Actually one of the best security systems I witnessed was the door handles on my old D1. A group of low-life drunks were trying to get into cars in the street and we watched for 5 minutes as one guy tried to find the door handles on the Disco and couldn't work it out... not like a Land Cruiser...how do you get into this thing:confused: ... he finally gave up and went to the next car (a Hilux).

Defender security is not good by modern standards. Fortunately, the probability of their being stolen is very low (particularly compared to the UK where they are much more common). More likely is theft of property from in them, and there you have the advantage that they are hard to look into compared to lower cars. But still, keeping anything attractive to thieves out of sight is worthwhile.
What do I do? If parking in a suspect area, I fit a club steering lock - and leave the transfer case in neutral and the fuel tap between the two tanks. Also have blinds on the windows and a sun screen on the windscreen to make the interior less attractive.
I have considered fitting mesh on the sliding windows and a car alarm and immobiliser (one problem is when I was looking into this there were no approved immobiliser installers west of the ranges).

I know a bloke around my area who has two heavy duty latches and padlocks on the doors of his sIII, I bagged him out and called him Mr Bean, I got a laugh out of him but then he walked off abruptly. Haven't seen him since.

Yes Uncle Ho I will be doing just that, after waiting for 3 months for the Defender.
Myself I'm going to make up a pedal lock with straight bar and padlock.

Does anyone know the figures for how many land Rovers get stolen? I bet its not many :p
A quick google got a list of the top fifteen models stolen - and Landrover did not get a mention. The fifteenth only represented 3% of the 21632 cars stolen (this is for 2005, Australia wide), and the only model on the list not a popular sedan was the Tarrago at number eight. The top five were various model Commodore and Falcon. (see ncars.on.net/)
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the category of cars least likely to be stolen is "full size four wheel drives" and I would think that of these Landrovers would rate at the bottom for most thieves, if only because of perceived poor performance and unfamiliarity.

the original door locks are bloody useless, it is actually harder to get past the locking fuel cap! I fitted an alarm and central locking to mine, if they use a key to unlock the door the central lock instantly locks it again before you can get the door open. the bonus is unlocking the car from across the road when you run to it in the ****ing rain:D

Yes I am trying to repair my driver side one at present. It must have got wind of this thread and decided that not being able to unlock from inside or outside is a very good security feature:mad: :( :(

Compulsory in WA to have an immobilisor. I reckon not too many people would be interested in stealing it anyway - high speed chase perhaps? :D
If I'm parking in a dodgy area I put the transfer lever in neutral. No way a scum bag car thief would work that one out. ;)

This thread has got me thinking, now that my handbrake actually works- and really well, I am mulling over making a bracket and locking device- maybe a window bolt type that locks the handbrake on.
I know that a determined thief would back off the adjuster, but if it was locked on tight, even that might not be "do able".
Nice and cheap, would work on the 4 wheels too;)
I use a "Krooklock" and welded up the backing plate when I saw a demo of how a screwdriver and hammer disable them in 3 sec flat.!!

My TDi Discovery has a switch under the dash (done by previous owner, bit of an obvious spot though). When switched, the motor turns over but won't start. I haven't looked to see what it connects/disconnects, but I'm guessing a fuel solenoid somewhere? anyone else done this?
Best regards

I made up a clutch and brake lock from a piece of flat ht steel strap and two long shanked hardened straight through padlocks. drill holes in the strap to accomodate the pins of the lock, put the U part of the locks under the clutch and brake peddle arms and through the strap steel, bung the locks on and pull them up tight and bing jingo they are locked together. there is even a small cut out in the back of the peddle arms to fit the U of the locks. bolt cutters cant get to the U so VERY VERY hard to defeat. a knock of of very expensive UK ideas and cost around $100 with good quality locks. Paint the strap a bright colour as a deterent for the would be crook so they see it before even breaking in. If you're really paranoid, slip some heavy chain around the strap and up to the steering wheel, again with hardened locks. crooks go for easy targets, make yours a little harder than others and you'll be OK:D

In NSW at least, it is illegal to leave a dog in a parked car.

Hey this is a bit unfair! They only sell 300 defenders a year, so even if everyone of them got stolen we still wouldn't register a blip :) LOL

You're right, of course - but do you WANT your Defender to be stolen? Actually it is probably not as bad as the sales figures indicate - Defenders stay on the road for longer on average than most other models, and the change of model is a lot less frequent - if you include the 110, Defenders have been on sale for well over twenty years, but none of the other models listed have been on sale for more than about two years, except the Tarrago - which may account for why they come fairly high; more of them counted as a single model. Unfortunately I could not find a complete listing of stolen vehicles by model, only the top fifteen.

They are so cute!! :D I reckon that like my old dog, they would be more likely to llick any thief to death before they attacked ;)
BTW...was your fridge in or out of car when stolen?
We call them the trippers, if you don't know where they are sleeping, you trip over them. Yes the fridge was in the car when it was stolen, but the dogs weren't.
P.S. I now use a bicycle lock to attach the fridge to the roller drawrs when it is in the car.
