I was looking at a car at toyota in heidelberg melbourne and need som input , well it was a defender 2004 (july) with 97000k/ms for $40,000 (its on carsales.com.au - Blue one).

Owned by some testical in hurstbridge who recorded no history in the service book. He traded it for a toyota.

Makes me wonder if it had problems and he became jaded with landrovers.

Dealer knows F-all about defenders which is a plus - he didn't understand the noises (but he was actually ok - not pushy at all and said flat out he doesn't know much about them).

I thought 97K in 2.5 years is a lot. Definately done some 4wding (winch is well used - TJM 10000 ox)

Couldn't see any leaks or underbody damage.

I must say after driving it my interest has dimished a bit in comparison to driving my disco. Will be thinking this one over.

Anyone know the vehicle/owner or have any other thoughts?

ps - factory warranty expires at 100K? (i think) dealer provides 1 year warranty...

Have you got the VIN - you might be able to find out from a dealer if it has been serviced.

I'm sure I can get it (VIN) but it was from Stewart Webster in melb who no longer exist:angel: .

However, i did find the prev owners name and mobile (amongst the documents) so if i end up proceeding i'll give him a call 1st.

average driver does no more on average than 25,000km per year

if its weigh over that amount it has done some serious travelling

if it has been long distance travel you got wonder about service history given the scarcity of land rover dealers about the place

defender and disco different vehicles so no comparison on rides

personally prefer my range rover

That price sounds rather high for a vehicle with no log books and those klms:eek:

That's what I was thinking, but on the other hand, if it has mostly been long distance travelling, this would give less wear and tear than use as a runabout.

If you ring your local Land Rover dealer and give them the last 6 digits of the VIN they will tell you the whole history of the car, including any warranty work done on it. If he's had it serviced at the local Auto-Tune then you'll be out of luck.

Also - $40K seems high for an 04 with those KMs. Sounds like it has had a hard life esp if the winch has had a lot of work. Dealer will provide a 3 month warranty (well, in SA anyway).

If the service history checks out and you can see yourself living with it, make a silly offer and see what they say. Nothing to lose.

Cheers

That's what I as thinking too except that with a well used winch I think a lot of it isn't distance work.

Well, they are a toyota dealership, they could be using it to sell people who have no idea Prado's:D

I have a diesel Paj, brand new in March 2005. I have done 117,000 Km in exactly two years and I can tell you, that is hard on any vehicle. I'd be very wary if I were you. My Paj is buggered and is actually in hospital (again) right now with a broken injector pump.

I have the vehicle serviced at half of the manufacturer's recommended interval and everything that has ever gone wrong has always been fixed immediately, no matter what the cost.... and yet the car is really knackered.

Some poor fool will probably pay a lot of dough for mine too, being only two years old and all.

If I were you I'd have the defender thoroughly checked out by a reputable Landy expert...or just give it a miss.

I saw an ad for a Defender today. Bright red 110, 0km, $47,500.

Seven thousand and a half isn't much more to pay.

And you get to run it in on the way home.

Cheers
Simon.

I bought a Prado new in 2001, drove it hard for 5 years, had 240,000ks on the clock and it was still driving sweetly!

IMO I would look for a late 2002 with the salisbury rear end, these were quite reliable and quite a lot cheaper than an '04, which apart from the rear end is basically the same. You can still get some with low K's, and most are around $25k to $30k absolute tops. Keep looking,no service history is a worry, but then again, some dealerships don't do enough to look after these vehicles, just changing oils isn't enough, they have to be loved and tenderly cared for to bring out their best....

Ridiculous typical dealer price! $30k max. (...and only if it checks out correctly).

Sounds like to much $$$. If it has been doing highway travel and serviced properly then the high milage shouldn't be a worry. Double check the waranty as I thought I had 12 months but turned out to be 3 months when I needed it.

Given that there is suppose to be a new defender model this year i think i will hold off and either buy a TD5 defender (once the value comes down due to new model) or lash out and get a new one:D .

I was thinking the same thing, i personally wouldnt touch the vehicle, thos km's with no service history is risky. Ring the previous owner and ask why he sold it, its not like he looses out on a sale if he tells the truth.

Dealers are always quick to quote the 'Red Book' price when you are trading a vehicle, you can do the same when purchasing. It is readily available on the net.

So a Paj buggered at 117,000 kms!

My Defender has done 210,000 in 5 years, has had regular servicing & has given no trouble. I did have to replace the speedo transducer recently.
The thing goes like a train - however it does100kms a day, a lot of which is at 110kph

G'day mns488 :)

The Red one that abaddonxi found is NEW with zero Klms and at that price less trade with a bit of haggling,;) and needing some extras to sway the deal :) you should come out just fine:D and a full warranty to boot.

cheers

The service history tells a lot about how an owner cares for his vehicle. Never buy a defender without a full service history, unless it is an absolute steel - and then expect the money you have saved to be spent on fixing something.

The price on this is really far too high - I would be patient, and keep looking. The advice to wait for the 07 release, and pick up an earlier demo or new would be the best bet, unless you are dead keen to get the new lumpy bonnet model.
