265/70/16s on a SII Disco

G`day all, has anyone fitted a set of 265/70/16s on a bog stock standard SII Disco, I don`t want to touch the suspension or trim anything, just fit em and forget em.

And what about the spare on the rear door, will they clear the rear wiper without any problems.

It is my misses Disco and I don`t want to mod it at all apart from changing the tyres, after a a couple of thousand KMs driving around Oman over the last week with 4 adults in it on some pretty rough dirt roads we had 2 Michilem XPCs fail, so its time to uprate the tyres, I would like to fit a set of 265/70/16 Cooper ATRs (or possibly BFG ATs) to give it a bit more clearance and a bit more agressive tread.

Whilst we`re at it, has anyone run Coopers ATRs on a Disco, they don`t look quite as agressive as the BFG ATs, which is what I prefer, as it does mainly road miles, the STD Michilens are a great road tyre, but were very lacking on the dirt, our cruisng speed out here in the middle east is fairly quick, so the tyres must be good for cruising at 130-140 at high 40 degree temps. I have heard some horror stories on the Cooper STs, but nothing on the ATRs.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I run 265/75/r16s on my disco, but I have a 2 inch lift. A number of us from d2au.com got together about a year ago to test if a standard disco can fit the 265's. The answer was yes, but you could experience some rubbing of the stearing arms when at full lock and articulation. Also if you have a standard bumper then you might get some rubbing on the bumper...I have a ARB bumper with the inner guards removed so I dont have this problem.

You also have to keep in mind that the 265's will alter your speedo by about 8-10 km and your gear ratios are out of wack. I have a manual and need to chip to give a bit more oomph to compensate for the ratios. If its the wifes daily driver then I wouldnt go as big as 265's, but maybe 245/70/r16. These fill the guards a bit better and many people think they should have been the standard tyre size.

I've got 255/70/16 Cooper ATR on my stock D2. No problem with the rear wiper but the spare only just clears the rear bumper. I'm not convinced anything larger would fit because of this.
The ATRs themselves have been great.

If you fit the 265's you will need to invert the carrier on the back and take a nick out of it to allow for the movement of the wiper or make a plate to offset the tyre (this is what I have).

245/75/16 is the same rolling diameter as 265/70/16 they fit a stock DII no probs the spare even clears the rear bar just, they don't rub on anything.

the diameters are 245/75 is 30.5" and 265/70 is 30.6", 265/75 is 31.7" which is the same as 235/85.

The only rubbing encountered was when I saw the tyres on the car the first time. (but thats a different story alltogether)

It is a bit of a hassle changing tyres and wheels over everytime you want to go offroad.

Thanks for that all, its greatly appreciated, it certainly gives me a bit to think about, it looks like there are no 255/70 ATRs in stock out here in Dubai at the momment, which is a bummer as I was almost sold on them.

Put the 245/75s on if you don't want the rubbing as they fit with no probs, the 235/85s are the same diameter as the 265/75s but not as wide AND you have more spares for the Fender and visa versa:D

i beleive the 245 stands for width of the tred in mm, but apparently not always accurate, the 75 is a percentage or something of the width which is the sidewall height. I think that is how it works.

No not confused, yes it does, throws the speedo out by 4% and yes sucks some power from the car, to bring mine back to standard power so to speak i had it chipped/ECU remapped.

If you don't tow it's not a big issue but we tow a heavy camper so the chip was a necessity.

The 75 is the height of the sidewall expressed as a pecentage of the tread width.

I don't know whether it was just a placebo effect but my car actually felt quicker with the big treads on and slugglish with the normal road treads. Yes I know it defies reason.
It definately uses more fuel with them on though.

I might have come across 4 near new 245/75s BFG ATs for about 250 bucks, it they are still available I`ll bang em on, for the price I can`t go wrong. :D

I'm going to 265/75/16 MTRs next just for the heck of it.

Apparently it's the beginning of lower diff ratios and stronger axles...

Not necessarily - if you drive your vehicle really hard on tough tracks, you will most likely break half shafts and diffs. I don't take on tough tracks (I need my vehicle operational as a daily driver to earn an income) and have never broken any driveline parts in the 5 years that I have been running 265/75 MT's.

The only thing that I have upgraded is the ECU as you will notice the engine working harder with the bigger tyres.
