Stinky Swag

Hi All

My swag has been in storage for about 12 months. It has been kept dry, but rolled up. It is a canvas swag with a 50mm high density foam mattress, a cotton sheet and a thin blanket.

BUT IT ALL STINKS!!!

I have washed the sheet and blanket and had everything hanging on the clothes line in the sun for weeks....but the musty odour won't go away.

Can I wash the canvas? what about the mattress?
Any other ideas?

Is the bottom of the swag PVC or some sort of plastic, if so this can cause the problem, I store mine unrolled on top of a spare bed (canvas bottom), if yours has a pvc base store it hanging up, like a suit, or with the PVC uppermost, try some Fabreeze upholstery deodouriser, if this dont work wash swag and mattress in cold water with a very mild soap, non-caustic, hang out to dry in the shade, NOT the sun, give it a go with the Fabreeze again and if that dont work get in touch with a canvas works or tent maker and get their advice, good luck, Regards Frank.

We have the same problem with a tent that got 'stored' wet and was forgotten about when we moved house.

I did the same thing and hung it on the line for weeks but it still smelt. I was going to try a spray bottle full of water with a bit of vanilla essence in it. That generally gets rid of most smells and I don't think it will ruin the fabric/canvas in any way.

No difference I guess to using one of those fabric air fresher sprays that you can get for carpet etc, I just figure the vanilla essence would be a cheaper option as it may need a few sprays.

Vanilla is a natural mould killer - McKlintocks vanilla fridge wipe - is great for cleaning camp fridges etc as well as around the home. - i dont know how it may effect the dye in canvas though

Vanilla essence- the taxi drivers friend, especially when someone spews in your cab on Saturday night.

Can't say we have ever had that trouble, but we don't store the mattress in the swag. Have it stored flat in a separate bag after everything has been aired after use.
