Want to go camping this weekend (Friday night 'til Sunday).
2 Defenders
4 Adults
4 Kids (2x 4yrs / 2x 2yrs)
We want to do some fun offroading, lovely campground, not too far away from Sydney (kids don't like to be locked in a car for too long).
Anybody some tips for a great weekend?
Cheers,
Daniel

Bush camping or facilities might be the deciding factor where you end up going.
Yalwal or the Watagans would be the best bet.
Both have designated camping areas. There's a few spots in Yalwal for bush camping too & I'd imagine the Watagans would have too.
The Blue Mountains would be another option. There's camp grounds at Lake Lyell & Bungleboori.
The 4x4ing is a bit light but the trip from Sunny Corner to Capertee is a nice drive with a choice of both types of camping.

Thanks for that first reply.
We don't need any facilities - carry everything with us.
Is there anything similar to the Wombayan Caves to Jenolan Caves track?

Daniel

mickNot the nature retreat !!
There's the Yarramunmun trail near Yalwal but I don't know if it's still open. That would really only be a day trip though.
There are other tracks that could be combined with this though that would extend the drive further south.
The drive from Sunny Corner to Capertee would only be a day trip too. You could combine that with a trip out through Sofala & Hill End & return via the Bridle Track to Bathurst. That would make a nice weekend trip but it would be light on actual real 4x4ing.
There's also Abercrombie National Park. There would be a weekend's worth of relaxing driving around there & hopefully some of the rivers might be flowing after the recent rain.
Do you have a copy of the Four Wheel Drive tracks close to Sydney ?

We did the Yarramunmun trail near Yalwal and had a great weekend. 4wd was light but there are good spots for camping and create scenery.
Thanks for that.

DanielGlad you had a nice weekend.
There's a few side tracks off Yarramunmun that are quite challenging if you want to explore next time.

DanielNo I don't. I'm a 1:100000 paper map guy :p .
I'll have a look on Google Earth tonight & see what I can find.

DanielOK, it took a while so I hope it's worth it  .
Intersection of track on Yarramunmun Trail:
34 58 17.17S 150 22 39.69E
Very, very steep hill:
34 57 53.97S 150 24 02.63E
I'm sure it has a name but I'll be stuffed if I know what it is. It's bad enough going down (especially when a tyre bead decides to part from the rim 1/2 way down), let alone going up.
Creek junction near Mintbush trail:
34 58 28.17S 150 24 52.20E
There are a few campsites NE of this junction.
Warning: I've only been to Yalwal a few times & the area looks completely different on Google Earth so I could be way off here.
Hopefully someone will be able to confirm or deny these are correct co-ordinates.
Also, some of the tracks are often closed (gated). It might be worth checking what's open & what's not before venturing too far.

We did a trip on the tracks around that area last year. Have a look here for the trip report:
