OK -- I am in the market for a new computer and seriously contemplating taking the plunge and buying a Mac.
From all the Mac users, I want to know the bad points of owning a Mac. I think I am across the good points;)
Thanks in advance

The only down side I can think of, is they are now owned by Microsoft.:(
Had one of them Pepsi type Macs for a while, pretty good little machine. the new ones can only be better. Ask Inc, he seems to know them well.
Shorty.
Oops Inc beat me in.

Ah, that explains everything. So Land Rovers are the Microsoft car.
And I thought it was just one of those internet jokes.

no, they are the apple car....
ibm and microshaft were forced by the us government to help keep apple going so there was a viable alternative....

Don't think it can be the Apple car and the Open source car. Mutually exclusive aren't they?
Well, except for OSX, but I'm guessing they're not sharing code.

From all the Mac users, I want to know the bad points of owning a Mac.
But Series-ly ...
The only down side with Macs is there is less software titles for OsX than Windows - that includes the Series II manual and parts catalogue on CD. All the pdfs are only available through the GUI which an EXE file.
Now, having said that, my MacBookPro is on order (I wanted one with NORMAL keyboard not that Euro stuff). Once I get it, first thing to do will be to install Parallels and Windows. This way, I can run both Mac OsX and Windows in, well, a window and all the apps (our Director of IT does that and manages the whole interational network on his Mac).
... or get BootCamp and boot either OsX or Windows
You could consider the initial expense a bad point. But, having worked in electronics industry I'd like to believe that the hardware is well designed with better components. So all in all, lack of down-time (if any), the fact that it works straight out of the box will account for the extra money spent up front.
So, no, there is no bad things about Mac - you can run ALL the software you like on EITHER Windows or OsX or both at the same time...
No no noooooo... Land Rovers are based on UNIX: everything but the Defender as nice GUI, Defender and nSeries are just as it should be:

I knew there was a reason I am cosy with my S3, it's all manual, no GUI in sight.

OK. The one I got here in Europe (so I can order some rare or fiddly little bits and pieces before I pack up and go) does not.
Good to see some Mac support happening... next thing you're gonna tell me there is a Falndie Cd coming out...

Go for it. I've been running Macs for about 7 years now, and while there is a PC in the office, it's really only used for proofing web design jobs, ebay and handling files from clients who run PCs.
Given the choice I'd get rid of the PC, but it belongs to my partner.

Thanks guys.
Inc -- will mainly used for photography (lots of RAM:angel: ) and surfing the web. Everything else is done at work.
One of the key reasons for my hesitation is having to pay for the MAC software license for the stuff I have already got (Photoshop and Nikon Capture)...

That's what I have heard too - should find out first-hand soon.
For photos, you can to a lot with iPhoto (colour corrections and stuff, no 'airbrushing') or splashout on Aperture. They are not like photoshop but great for adjusting photos.

Noddy, they are great, stable, and come with most things you need built in. The security is sensational too.
They just work. They have converters for everthing. A friend had a nice nikon that put out NEF files. On her pc she has to use all sorts of stuff to work with them. Everything on the apple knows how to handle graphic arts files. :)
With the new ones you can run windoze so there isn't too much in the way of excuses anymore.
You do pay for them, but have a close look at the specs and you'll see they are seriously premium hardware. Really top notch stuff.

Thanks everyone!
Inc -- would appreciate your feedback on CS2.
If I went to a Mac, I would probably use Aperature (instead of Capture) for my NEF conversions. I hear Aperature is very good.
Thanks

Been with the Apple since about 1978 and have had maybe 30 of them the most expensive one cost me $48,000 in 1994 and another ten for the screen. It also made me a fortune. But it was a very trick broadcast edit machine - you may have even seen some of the thousands of tv commercial we made.
There is a downside to running a Mac apart from the addictive qualities.
But only for those who've come from OS9 and have moved to OSX.
The 'great changeover' caused some upset as OSX was very different to all the previous OS.
But in the fullness of time OSX is superb (and yes I do some system work with Windows OS on the only PC here). I have about six Macs in current operation and they're, umm, smooth, luv em.
It also depends on the Mac you buy - get the right machine for your purposes - or you may be disappointed -
I have a G4 Cube here which is now old (5 years and is a beaut) but it was unloved by many. I also have its bigger desktop sibling, a G4 733QS, which is similar but a bit more 'equipable', loved by many, but noisy and a power hungry baby. The desktop G5 twin chipper is amazing but is physically huge and is a hot running sucker - like the G3 beige was.
Like Land Rovers, these machines seem to have personalities, is that a bit weird? I can see distinct personalities in my many Macs, some are very nice, some are brilliant, but a few, like the twin G3s i recently decommissioned, are temperamental.... go figure....
If you go laptop do your research thoroughly.....

I forgot to mention that you'll have 48 hours of sheer terror. You won't be able to find anything or do anything. However after that 48 hours it will be all good.

You're not wrong there captain r.
OSX was a big learning curve:cool:
I still use a few OS9 apps and they now look so dated and run like so...
It's truly amazing to think that only 12 years back i had the ants pants in this level of gear; 20 gigs of scsi hdds as raid arrays and the top end Macs grunting along; the brilliant 8100s.
Now there's a house full of terraflops, which cost bugger all....

Only yesterday did I get my first urge to go to OSX. Got a brief from a new client and was supplied with the corporate typeface that has a PC version and the OSX osf file, but nothing for OS9.
Now I have to do the job on the (I hate to use the word) PC!
Grrrr.
