I want the silver headlight surrounds.

I sprayed mine Black Acrylic, as well as the Grill.

The grill is untreated and as the Plasticiser leaches out with the heat and weather is starts to warp, and the surrounds look crap when the plastic goes dry........Moral of the story is I almost went Silver with the Acrylic.....just was not convinced to go the full bore.......:)

Uh huh, that was dull - looked like a powerpoint preso.

About time they made a new nose for the 'fender, love the rest of it, but that front is getting very tired.

Close up shot of the oh so sexy tiny tail light? I thought it was a gag... but it was trying to be serious????

The 'fender could be easily adapted to the RR classic front end... 'fender style... given the penchant for traditional round headlights...

Can someone explain the obsession with appearance for a utility vehicle? For a start, "restyling" would involve a whole collection or new parts, most of which are likely to be damaged in a minor accident, will be unavailable second hand since they are only used for a year or two production - and for the same reason, knowing Landrover, in a few years they will be unavailable from the manufacturer either.

Probably the main attraction of the Defender is the fact that it does NOT change unnecessarily.

You'd think in 2007 the sexy tail lights would be flush mounted instead of utilising trailor lights, this would not only look better but would have a practical application in that they wouldn't get smashed as easily in a 4wd or minor traffic bingle.

Same comment - requires unnecessarily changing parts - in this case the rear side panel, the rear panel, the steel body capping, and the light (replacing it with one that while it might be slightly less vulnerable would cost ten times as much to replace, and you would only be able to get the whole light not the glass). All the parts you are proposing to change are the same or at least interchangeable for the last twenty years or more. The sensible thing would be to fit protectors similar to the army's fittings on the Series Landrovers, preferably as standard.

Definitley a big improvement inside with some familiar switches and positions there so people don't get lost. Bonnet bulge interesting, wonder what prompted that, v6tdi perhaps?

Not owning a Defender myself, are the doors different too? These look to be one piece.

All Civilian Defenders (and the 110/90 since about 1985) have had doors with windup windows - and all doors with windup windows have been one piece. The Defender doors currently used were introduced in 1987, with a pressed steel frame rather than the earlier built up frame. As far as I can tell from the photos, these are the same in the new model.

110's had the lift up handle then the Defenders has push button doors - right?

G'day Folks :)

I agree with what JDNSW has posted, the whole concept of a utility vehicle is it's practicality;) it shares a basic body style of it's precedesors and that replacement parts and panels are basically interchangeable, this is a major factor with O/seas Aid agencies, as the cost factor is a large part of their budget concerns, these vehicles are not built as a Fashion Item but a Working vehicle, style changes by other manufacturers is only driven by the need for sales and to keep the production lines and stylists in work :( You can fit a lamp, Clutch M/cyl from a Series 3 straight into a TD 5 defender, even the Throwout bearing is interchangeable 1971-2006, Headlights from 51-06,;) try to do that with a Nippon built one they don't even carry parts past 10 years.

They are my thoughts anyway.

cheers

right :D

Wrong! The door design changed in 1987, the name changed to Defender in 1989 (although none were imported here for the next year or two). Military doors remained almost the same as S3.

To go through the whole history:-
(Ignoring S1 as they have a different shape and the doors don't interchange with later models - same applies to Lightweights and FCs)

The door shape was introduced as a two piece door with the S2. This remained unchanged with the S2a and S3 except for the provision of different window locks in the S3 and the introduction of antiburst locks in the later S3. Door trim was optional. In addition, the door check was different from S2 to S3. The 110 introduced a different door check, and the join between the fixed and sliding glass followed the front sloping door edge, rather than being vertical as it always had been until then. In about 1984 the 110 and 90 civilian versions (except canvas top) got wind up windows with one piece doors (and fake lower door top galvanised trim) with different door locks, still with lift up handles, and door trim as standard. In 1987 these doors were replaced by a new door, the same shape but thicker, and with a pressed steel frame instead of the welded frame from channel steel. This door had push button handles, and dropped the galvanised trim, and remains in production today, and as far as I can see is used in the new model.

The hinges are the same on S2 and 2a, then changed with the S3 and remain the same today.

My 90 has the gen Land Rover silver light surronds and front grill. At the time we put them on they had just come out and the one silver light surrond was the same pruice as the whole set of three in the black

But unlike the county grills in the 80's (which we painted so they would start to peal after a couple of years and look crap) these are sloid silver so they do not peal. Mine have been on for 4 years and look fine. Also looks best with the white indicator lenses too.

The first one has a series 3 windscreen. The other 2 have a later windscreen.

How come?

Over a few years Land rover were playing with the range rover chassis and land rover bodyBut they were mostly made around 1978]

This is why in the UK ARC (assiated Rover Club) you can race a 100" land rover hybrid , but can't race a tomcat or bowler. All becasue land rover made a 100" and never made a bowler

Are there any privately owned 100' Land Rovers? Or are they all owned by Dunsfold?

Reads90

From talking to Phil over the years about it. They have the biggest collection (dunsfold) but there are one or two sold to the private people but no one knows where or if they are still about

BTW Useless fact of the day . Dubnsfold Land Rovers is in Dunsfold (hence the name) same place where (infact next door) Top Gear is Film. Tiny Village 40 miles south of London out in the middle of nowhere. Well in Uk terms:)

I think it was the Swiss army, but I'm not sure - and then they didn't buy Landrovers anyway. Trinidad I think was the V8 88s.
