wireless & no connection

My uncle has me pulling hair out over his wireless setup, hes using a Belkin 802.11g and it has full signal on the laptop but can not connect to the net IE: browser or email ???????, if i connect the cat cable between the wireless hub and laptop we can browse the net and get email:mad: , this has confused me to no end to my thinking if i cant get wireless i shouldnt be able to connet with the cat aswell. If anyone can cast a helping light please do.

have you got any encription set up on the wireless modem.

I know on my set up - I had loads of problems when I first started, one I sorted out the setup in the modem and on the laptop it's fine.

When you say you have the right signal strength - is there an icon that when mouse over shows - veiw available wireless networks - if you can click on that - then choose your connection - you should be able to set any settings/encryption

I'll set me laptop up and go through the process myself - might be able to give a better/clearer answer

Is it a firewall & router?

Check if it requires any MAC address filtering to specify which clients can see the outside world.

Lots of places to look with this one... but a basic start is whether windows tells you you have are connected to the network. (It is possible to see lots of signal but not actually be connected to the network.)

If you are not... is his network secured with WEP or other security protocol... if so you will need to configure the laptop accordingly.

If it's not secured - windows will not by default connect - you need to tell it to..

If you are connected... next step is find out if your IP addressing makes sense..

Try this... Start>Run> type "cmd" enter

In the dos box Type "ipconfig /all"

Look at the entry for the wireless adapter

Make sure you have an IP address on your uncles network ( not a 169 address)
make sure that you have a dns server address.

These things would normally be provided to the laptop from the router ( if the router has wireless DHCP enabled)

There is plenty more... but that is a good start.

Check these things and let us know how you go.

Are you using a hub or a router? Who is the ISP? If Optus, you may need to clone the laptop's MAC address to the router. (I have a D-Link router and this is mentioned on thw D-Link router website)

Connect to the router via a cable and clone the MAC address. It will be under the router setup somewhere.

Wireless on newer laptops can be hell. I've had a terrible time recently with a mate's Asus.

Make sure the computers are running service pack 2 of XP - if they run XP.

Again, I've recently had some stupid awful times installing SP2. Don't just rely on automatic updates, check under Control Panel/System that SP2 is on the computer. If not you might have to go find it and download it yourself.

I assume that the drivers are all working correctly. Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Any of the list of devices that have yellow ? next to them have driver problems.

Upgrade firmware only as a last resort. Flashing bios is the easiest way to buy a new computer/router/etc.

Turn off everything -firewalls, antivirus, all that security stuff.

Turn off Windows firewall. If he has a router it is redundant and just causes trouble.

Log into the router (browser window, type in ip address e.g. 192.168.0.1) and confirm SSID, turn off all wireless security - MAC filtering, WPA, WEP, etc. Try switching to Ad Hoc mode to test connection - for security you want to be in Infrastructure mode.

Make sure the router is set to DHCP Server and the laptop network stuff is set to DHCP client or DHCP assigns ip address.

Check if the laptop has proprietary network connection managing software. Sometimes this can switch off other types of connection if it detects another type active - unplug ethernet cable should solve this.

Make sure router and laptop wireless adapter aren't switch to wireless 802.11A rather than 802.11G/B.

Once you have it working go through and turn all of the wireless security stuff on again, and make sure there is a real password on the router.

Stick with it and stay patient, wireless networks are a pain for those that don't love them.

With mine, I have to click the proxy server box when operating on works system, and uncheck it when accessing my own wireless network. The option is under Internet options, then under connections, then under LAN settings. If I don't do this, the computer says that its connected, but the internet comes up as if not connected.

there are too many variables to list as to why it won't work, really WAY too many.

Best option is to make sure the ISP supports that specific router, do a factory reset on the router and call the ISP help line.
Tell them your old one died and you need to know how to set it back up again. Let them work for the money you pay them.

Most will say they dont support wireless but give it a go and most will help.

Thanks for everyones help, i tried all the recomendations plus a few i found by searching the net and yep as usual nothing worked. I spent 4 hours :( on it and still no go with the wireless but worked with the CAT5 network cable ???? connect into the hub. My uncle is going to get a PC guy in to try and fix.

Try changing the encryption from wpa to wep, sometimes the higher level encryption causes trouble. As well have you set a hex type password and is it entered in the network terminal correctly?

As already mentioned, there is oh so many reasons why it's not working.

The first step is to try get the wireless working with NO encryption and work up from there.

Gday well its all fix, so iam told, it was a setting in the wireless hub and locked everyone out ???? my uncle couldnt tell me what it was tho, so once again thanks for the help everyone
