Is there any difference between the rover type front diff in a series and the County(1985) front diff, ie. are the centres interchangeable.

uummm the ring and pinions are differant. The series has a 4.7 ring and pinion and the 1985 one has the 3.5 (same as the Rangie Classic ) ring and pinions.

So basically the diffs will fit into each car but not with the right gearing

Thanks, I am reasonably sure my front diff is on the way out and I intend to find another centre to rebuild before it dies, so the offroad time is reduced. I am looking for a second option to rebuild if I can't locate the correct ratio centre in the first place. Now with this info I can source a new ring and pinion that will suit either scenario.

It isn't just the ring and pinion!!! The ring gear flange is also in a different spot! You can fit a 4.7:1 (series) ring gear to a coiller/county centre with a spacer, but not the other way around.

What makes you think your diff is worn out? Chances are it just needs the preload and backlesh set up properly again.

Unless I am mistaken the front diff in your County is interchangeable with front or rear diff in the early Classic Rangerover - and these should be fairly easy to find, and probably cheaper than replacing bearings in yours. Someone want to confirm this?

As far as I know the same basic diff was used from about 1949 to the present in Landrovers with rigid axles except for those Landrovers with Salisbury rear axles. The differences that make them not interchangeable are that all Series except stage 1 (and some 1948) were 4.7:1, where all RR, Disco, Stage 1, 90/110/Defender are 3.54:1 except for 6x6 which are 4.7:1, and some time in late Classic RR and Disco 2 changed the spline on the inside end of the axles.

The appearance of the diff changed some time in the late 70s I think, at least in the Series, but this should not affect interchangeability.

Yeah you are right .
The front and rear diff out of a Rangie Classic will go straight in and has the same ratio, also the same with some of the earler disco's
Your 110 will have 10 spline half shafts
The range rover classic will be 10 spline half shafs ( really late ones have 24 spline) and the Disco was 10 spline up untill about 94 about start of 300 Tdi
About the same age that the 90 / 110 changed to 24 spline as well from 10 spline

A bit of history on the front diff, when I first bought the car (over 3 years ago) the hub seals were leaking and there was discoloration of the oil from water ingress. I put a kit in each hub along with new bearings and seals. It has been making a grinding noise the last few weeks on a left turn so I thought as the right wheel is turning faster than the left, then the r/hand cv joint is the problem. Also when driving straight I can here an intermittent scraping noise from the right front. Anyway the upshot is I have replaced the r/hand cv and I am still getting the noise. Have I chosen the wrong cv or is the diff the source of the problem. Also the balls in the cv I replaced don't show any damage, the inner and outer splines and the driven hub look ok as well.
I guess I'll have to remove the l/hand side cv to confirm one way or the other.
Also thanks to all for the info on the various diffs. Hopefully I can lay my hands on a rangie front diff and solve the problem.

and some time in late Classic RR and Disco 2 changed the spline on the inside end of the axles.
The Disco2 and P38's were different on the outer part of the axle because of their semi-float setup rather than the normal axle arrangement.

Ok just a quicky
Get under the car and on the inisde of the brake disc are stone protectors. Get a big screw driver and pul them away for the discs (all the way round).
Will take 5 mins but this may be your problem. Do it to both sides
