View Full Version : Famous people.

Hello to all again,

Having started the Best bands thing, I got to thinking of famous people that we may have met. Suzi Quatro being the most famous musician that I have actually spoken too and for about 10 minutes. So I thought about others that I have met, shaken hands with and had a conversation with albiet briefly.

Michael Caine. Book signing in Melb.
Charlton Heston. Book signing in Melb.
The Queen. Gatwick airport terminal opening in 1988.(I have the photo too)
Pat Rafter. Shared a lift with him in Noosa back in 98. There is a really funny story to go with it but would take too long to type.

Well l've met every Prime Minister of Australia on more than one occasion and had either breakfast lunch or dinner and few drinks with them from Gough Whitlam to John Howard.

Must say the two l was most impressed with were Gough and Paul

The one l respect the most since leaving office for their views and work is Malcom.

So depending on your politics they fit both the famous and infamour catergories

OK

I had dinner with Richard Clapton at Kings Cross, we had the only table left in the resturant that had room enough for them, so we let them sit with us.

Then a dance with Renye Gayer later that night at the Mansel room night club, big girl;) and very nice to talk too, a very interesting night:D

I've also met Wayne Gardner, Kenny Roberts, Barry Sheen (what a top Bloke) Wayne Rainey and Keven Bartlett (another top bloke) he took me for a spin around Eastern creek:D

Have also raced against Paul and Shaun Giles (watched Shaun grow up racing bikes from his first meeting at Fairburn Park.

My sister went to school with that blonde chick that was famous for a little bit. Forget her name but was in the first dodgy tv band 'Bardot' and that movie that was like 'Scary Movie' but wasn't. She used to come over to our house sometimes.

Very memorable obviously :D

I wouldn't call concerts meeting someone but went to the last Gympie Music Muster and saw quite a few famous people (the singers) wandering around in the crowd.

EDIT: Just did a Google search and it was Sophie Monk and the movie was Date Movie.

Second go at this, buggered up the phots,
now let me see, famous or infamous, infamous always conjured up all sorts of things,
let me start with the bad guys, arrested Sallie ann Huckstep once, she was a great liar.
gangland bosses, Tony eustace wasn't a bad bloke always knew which horse was going to win, too bad someone shot him, Mick Sayers always pleasant, but he too went by the way of the bullet.
Murray Farquar, very shifty,
most of them you wouldn;t cross the road to speak to them, unless of course you were working, good crooks for CIU's.
back to resonable people,
robert ballard, at a book launch, very interesting bloke
Barry Humphries a real gentleman ( when he was in a suit)
Sting and Bob Geldoff, quietly spoken both of them.
the previous popes bodyguards,

Policiticians all seem to be tarred with the same brush, a conversation with neville wran convinced me he wasn't a nice man.
That US woman Madelaine Albright when clinton was here in 95 I think, typical yank though she could do what she wanted, her opening line,' Do you know who i am...' fancy saying that to a nsw copper who isn't impressed ( me)
famous aussies
michael diamond, russell mark, suzy balogh, clive and george barton
Countess Pinky Le grelle , british comm games skeet shooter, lesley goddard, the whole irish trap team(always in the bar at the village)
Mike Munro, no he doesn't count he is only a journo.
I know some more famous ones, at least they told me they were famous( probably to get in the photo)

Chatted and drank beer with Keith Payne, Australia's only living Victoria Cross recipient. Several times.:D

Went to school with Jeremy Burgess of 500GP fame. Aldgate Primary, inthe Adelaide Hills. And his rather attractive blonde sister Katie.;)

Ditto, Robert Klompe, 1970's VFL Carlton, ex-Sturt, ex Aldgate PS.

Had a chat with Bev Harrell, as I carried her costume cases for her, a couple of years ago. Ah, boyhood crushes.

Got snubbed by that wine and sailing fellow, Hardy. Does that count?

I reckon it's amazing how Russell Coight looks like George W Bush. When Bush goes soon, he could front the USA version of Russell Coights All Aussie Adventures - a position he would be ideally suited for.......

I can see it now, George's Tours of Texas: "Afore we goes drarvin, we needs ta change the ingin in tha Suburban, ah. N git a sixpack ah Bud."
And - ah needs to put in the gern racks, n git sum shells. En we kin take Cheney 'long, he's a guuud shot."

Many years ago, I was installing a sound system in a prominent Perth doctor's mansion in Claremont. He was having a party that night and we were struggling to have the job finished in time. As my father had been an old professor of his, he invited us to stay back and 'monitor' the system - which I seemed to recall consisted of us walking around with bottles of champagne we couldn't pronounce and chatting to his (rather celebrious) guests. I ended the night getting drunk with Kate Manning (of Dr Who fame) and Andrew Sachs (Manuel from Fawlty Towers). Quite a night!

One of the funniest things I have seen is Bill Hunter and another familiar Australian actor whose name I forget winding up a young shop assistant on grand final day a couple of years back. They were both dressed to impress if you were living in the 1960s (but this was two years ago, and they pulled it off wonderfully) and they were carrying on as if they were both handicapped with seriously impared speech. The young bloke had no idea who they were which made it even better to watch.

I've asked Mick Gatto to leave somewhere before (politely). He did, and told me I was a gentleman. I twigged the next day.

I've also met a number of medal winning athletes and been part of the tech/equipment support.

Also walked into Jason Donovan in Chapel St (literally), didn't give him the time of day.

Chatted to Sigrid Thornton in a supermarket. She's tiny!

Have been go cart racing with Lowndes and Seaton when they were both racing for Ford. Both easy going and down to earth, no big ego's even though they well and truely outclassed the rest of us. Even ate the BBQ that was put on.

We told Craig about one of the girls who was a big fan of his but wasn't able to go so we called her and he said hello. OK my turn. Met the late Govenor of NSW, Sir Roden Cutler, when I were a young bloke. A thouroughly charming gentleman. Not famous perhaps ( at least not to me, as she is the wrong flavour ), but met the Hon. De anne Kelly, local member for Whitsunday. But I can't think of anyone important.

I supplied car parts to one of the competitors in the Paris-Peking Rally (one of the Hillman Hunters. The team couldn't get parts in the UK so they were referred to me - my email address at that time was hillman@bigpond.com and I ran the Hillman Owners Club website).

Ron , you are the first person I have come across that doesn't know about sport.

When I said I take no interest in sport - I meant exactly that. I couldn't identify many sports persons.

During the Olympics I was offered free tickets to a corporate box at the athletics (plus hotel accommodation for the night). I turned them down as I couldn't think of anything more boring than watching athletics (except maybe football of any code). I was a bit more diplomatic than that.

I grew up in a home where my parents had no interest in sport and I suppose it transferred across. My sisters have no interest and neither do my kids. My wife watches equestrian events but that's it -she's not interested in general sports either.

In newspaper quizzes we do very well on general knowledge but can never answer any sporting question.

Again mate please don't be offended.
Its interesting,
as far as the olympics, it is a shame you didn't take up the offer, although I worked clearing and patrolling a lot of the venues with my little black dog. Sydney had an atmospere I can only describe as electric, completely different to its normal self. I know it may sound weird and I may have been sniffing too much explosive, but its true, I even had a day off during the first week and took my son into the basketball. Visiting as a punter was an unreal experience, then later in the week i was lucky to be given a ticket to the trap shooting finals, aside from nearly knowing everyone in the stands , it too was different,
the whole olympic and paralympic experience is something that will, for me, stand out for a long time in my mind, and yea there was a lot of elbow rubbing especially in the games village. and other behind the scenes areas.
Oh yea, the only athletics that turned me on, was when the para games were on, they deserved everything they got.
Both experiences for me, as a worker at Sydney 2000 and a team official at Melbourne 2006, have remained as experiences that far exceed those normal day to day events we all go through,
plus I get to do some good name dropping.

Nor offended in the least. I hope I don't offend thee by taking no interest in sport. :)

The best thing about the Olympics was that traffic to and from work was much reduced. It took me less time to get to/from work during the Olympics (and for some time after).

I didn't watch any of the events (apart from the opening ceremony - I didn't bother watching the closing ceremony) on TV and couldn't care less who won what or which country won more medals. It was completely unimportant to me.

I wouldn't have attended anything anyway as I absolutely hate crowds and will not go anywhere where there are crowds.

Both experiences for me, as a worker at Sydney 2000 and a team official at Melbourne 2006, have remained as experiences that far exceed those normal day to day events we all go through,
plus I get to do some good name dropping.

yeah john, i was on the gates at the athletes villiage - so i spent the entire games sittinginside a white tent xraying things - i hated it to the max - was on the quads on the first day though - made the papers as apparently someone :wasntme: caused 10 grands worth of damage to the villiage.

in the end i chucked that many sikkies that when time came to send people back to their units early i got to go early.

as for athletes that were nice - the para's were the best nicests professional athletes i have ever met -

you still at the doggies - is gleddo still there ?

I forgot about Colleen McCullough. She gave me a full set of her books - all autographed "To Ron and Elisabeth, with love, Colleen McCullough" - when I left Norfolk Island.

Thanks ron, I didn't think you would take it the wrong way, hey your not doing too bad though dropping some good names every now and then. Collen McCulloch is a good one.

Hey Mick, thought as much, you'd know me then, my face anyway, mark smith and i were there nearly everyday, i was the bloke that started up the random f/p's off in all the public access areas, circular quay etc, only because I was told we couldn't do it.
So you were on the nightshift that all the trouble occured, with the quads. I remeber seeing some divots near the back fence
Were you working the day the Atlantics came through the xray tent,
you'd know darryl holder and greg black, they turned into grade one knobs there at that venue.
You know the little garden of plastic animals the aussie netballers had in front of their house, mine and smithys dog made off with them.
The credit union did a blurb on me at the commonwealth games.

No mate i have gone the way of most of the pre-88ers, got broken , **** on, and went. i think you told me that gledo was on the way out too, i was there the other week and he is definately gone. Hey I was a one eight. and i think gleddo is a one seven, the threes are, we,ll the top levels. i'll bet there is a three doing an LAC job. I know there were a lot of 25's and 26's as lacs. Unheard of, no wonder all the experience is leaving.
I'll leave the blurbs for aussie cops, its more fun on there.

Absolute champion bloke and crazy with his crocs, he is/was my idol up there... every other minute was spent ****ed as a bug in a puddle of bourbon... congregating with the other bar flies :)

I have played back yard cricket with Alec Stewart - former captain of England.

Many years ago he used to Come out to Aus in the summer and play in the local Perth competition. He was going out with my mate's sister and would often join us for a tonk.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Actually went to school with and played under 8's Aussie Rules (as it was known then) with former NSW and Australian opening batsman John Dyson, who took one of the best outfield catches you will ever see in a cricket match. Showing my age I know.:p

I met David Bowie twice. I was a partner in a london based software company, working out of Boston, and we built www.bowieart.com (http://www.bowieart.com) (changed dramatically since) - which was one of the first ecommerce sites - we had to talk to porn site owners to see how the did the bank end. We had stict instructions on protocol of meeting him, including not saying we were big fans and not asking for autographs. As part of the project we picked up a set of 4 limited edition lithographs, variously entitled D Head somthing, which were self portaits. they sold back in 1998 for $250 each, and would think they are worth a pretty penny now.

I also used to park next to Sophie Ryhs Jones in our underground car park when I worked in West London in 1999. She worked for a PR agency in the office next to us, before she became a royal. She was very beautiful back. One day she suddenly had her long blond hair cut in a lady Diana style, and next thing I know I couldn't get into my office for the press and announcement of her engagement to Prince edward.

There is a corker of a boasting story thayt goes with this, but I daren't put it in a public forum. If I ever see you on the tracks, crack a beer and I will probably tell ya. lol
