View Full Version : OK to fit CD/AM/FM into D1's centre console @ 45 degrees?

I've been told by an audio buff that you can't successfully fit a CD player/AM/FM radio combo in place of the standard AM/FM/Cassette player in an early build Disco 1 [with radio/Cassette in lower centre console] because the near 45 degrees mounting angle causes the CD to constantly skip beyond its memory capabilities......rendering them useless except when stationary............:(
Do I have to fit a separate remote CD magazine stacker and player?:o
.......or can I fit even a single CD in dash player?:( .......or can some brands of multi disc in-dash units be fitted successfully?:o
I'm well aware of CD players' limitations on outback corrugations, but I'm looking forward to music of MY choice on sealed roads and the urban jungle.

Firstly - rather than a CD unit why not get an iPod compatible unit or one that an MP3 player can plug into. Failing that make sure it can play MP3 CD's.
The angle shouldn't be a problem on most reasonable units for a single in dash slot. The problem would be with a stacker unit as these really only work horizontal or vertical. I'd save the money on a stacker and get an iPod then with iPod compatible unit you've got all you need and it can be easily removed from the car.

Keep the original radio, buy an amplifier and an MP3 player, admitedly it wont sound as good as CD but you will have no skipping, stratched CD's dust on lasers, and a heap more music on hand. As for the 45 degree problem thats just utter BS to make you buy a stacker. If it wasn't how come discmans never had a problem.

Jeez, Byron, now you tell me after all those years I had a CD player in the usual position in my Rangie classic (at 45 degrees).
It replaced this radio:

No worries, for the record a laser will read on any angle, light does not discriminate, low price cd players will jump on potholes and corrigations.

My Sony Xplod said do not mount at more than X degrees. I forget the number but it was a long way short of the D1 slot angle. I never had any problems in the year I had it. However, I did fit it thinking that it may be a case of trying out the 2 year warranty...

I've had a VDO unit in there for about three years, no problems. Even tho' it's a bit warm........
The gadget itself is a bit too clever for its own good, however.....

The very early cd players had a problem with angles, but not the current crop of units from wherever. Today there is no adjustments do do manually as there was years ago. Replace laser and turn on thats it, sometimes clean lens when skipping.
The early models had a few adjustments to do to get them right and one adjustment would affect the other.

I agree with the threads which talk about ipods etc,
when i get money (and do other more important mods) ill be puting a system in which has usb capabilities and running a 40gig external hard drive which runs soley of the power from usb (seen a few guys in college with them they say the cost about 60bucks). all the music u'd ever want at ur fingertips. i believe some more top range JVC and Clarion headunits allow this already but way outa my budget.

Thats interesting, are these laptop hdd size or the larger units ? i thought they would need 12V not the 5V that USB uses ?

I looked at one of these recently - see http://www.cnet.com.au/desktops/storage/0,239029473,240062880,00.htm\
They run off the USB port (USB 2.0)

The D1 I sold last year had an Alpine single disc CD mounted in the standard slot at the front of the console. Never had any problems with it. On the other hand, the stacker in the D2 started skipping on the way back from Perth first trip out of Kalgoorlie. Have since replaced the whole system, speakers and all, with Sony. Radio, single disc and MP3 in dash, 10 disc stacker - also MP3 under drivers seat, amp under the passenger seat next to 2 way radio unit, Sony speakers in doors and 10" sub in a box in the left side of the back where one of the original LR storage bins was. Now I can compete with the "Doof Doof" from my son's Honda.

I have a good quality Pioneer CD player mounted into an 89 Rangie. Absolutely no problems with the music however the spring that ejects the cd has struggled over the last few years. I bought a Pioneer Ipod adaptor and run an Ipod with the radio controling it. Dont have a cd in the car now, and have about 5 days of music on the Ipod. If you record the music at a higher bit rate (over 200 mps) then you will notice very little if any difference to the original cd.

i had an early D1 back in NZ, put a new CD into it as you want to do, never gave me a problem, with the price they are these days see if you can get a plug n play iPod stereo, or, if youhave an iPod, get an iRiver transmitter for $70 from Dick Smith, wife has one of those, works perfectly...

LincAldi have a car radio with a USB port (and Bluetooth) on sale this week.
Around $189 or so.
It should be on their specials list this week on www.aldi.com.au (http://www.aldi.com.au) .

The CD player works just fine in my Rangie Classic mounted at that angle. Just steer clear of the cheap rubbish and buy good quality equipment.

I had a Kenwood fiited in mine when I purchased it, occasionally it jammed as the eject mechanism isn't strong enough, had it checked out and the unit itself was fine. fitted a Nakamichi mp3/cd and have had no problems since

will respond to two of the posts above:
. as with previus post, my JVC doesn't have a problem playing CDs at this angle, but it does have a problem with ejecting CDs at this angle.
. the Aldi player seems like good value, until you realise its 4x20w rather than 4x50w...

with the money you save on the head unit buy a small amplifier. Whats the problem?
not so many years ago 4x20w was the norm for a high end headunit.

I've had a single disc MP3 CD/AM/FM unit in my D1 for 4 years with no problems, but if I was doing it again I'd be looking at iPods and i Rivers and stuff. As it is, I just burn discs with as much music as I can cram on them.

yeh as said they run completly of usb. some come with a duel cable to increase power and make more efficient...which could be problematic (a usb hub could help that i presume) but on my computer i only have one free usb which is the older style and it was fine to use and i was running files off it for a couple of hours and it was fine, generated abit of heat but nothing abnormal compaired to my big external. since then i have used ones which run of one usb and also others with there own batery compartment (3 aa) so im sure there are plenty of options out there.
in terms of size this was about the size of a leather wallet, easily fit in the centre console (out of site).
