Gday All,
Just looking at purchasing a TDI300, but looks like i might have missed it, anyone know what these go for complete normally? complete as in, motor, all manifolds, turbo, injectors and pump, etc etc all that i need to put it in to a old Defender(late 80s)

thanks,

Mick.

LRHybrid100 is the man to speak to - you might recall his photos of the conversion on the old site.
(Roughly from what I've seen, anywhere from 2-3 grand or more, depending on age)

You might also look at the 2.8 litre Isuzu 4JB1T engine.

I would prefer these over a 300Tdi. They are a popular conversion for rangies and defenders in the UK.

Advantages over a 300Tdi include, a bit more grunt and they dont have the timing belt issues. They are shorter, so plenty of scope to move the radiator back and fit a large intercooler in front, instead of the pi$$y little 300Tdi one.

Probably more common here as well. But avoid the 3 litre Isuzu.

How much power does the 2.8 have, the 3ltr has pretty much the same as the TDI.

the 2.8 sounds interesting, how does it go compared to the 3.9 4bd1thats the other option at moment, but i am not sure how they handle the beach work do to not being a very revy motor..

Only problem with Isuzu stuff is the cost of parts Tdi would be heaps cheaper, if you change the belt in a Tdi then thats not an issue either.
Still don't know how the 2.8 could have more grunt than the Tdi as the 3ltr makes the same as a Tdi and it replaced the 2.8.

I thought the plan for the 90 was a petrol powered monster, why the change of heart?

Avoid the 3 litre, they reportedly are not as good/reliable as the 2.8 litre.

AFAIK, the 2.8 is direct injection and the 3.0 is indirect.

Although smaller than the 4BD1, the 4JB1T has more power - newer technology, turbo and higher reving.

Injection pump can be tweaked as for the 300Tdi.

Will look into the 4jb1t if this TDI i am looking at falls through, but if i do get it for the money the seller is asking i will be very happy :)

What do the 4jb1t's typically sell for?

I see there is a LR diesel for sale on eVilBay in the Northern part of NSW.

I didn't take much notice of it and I can't check from work. Dunno if it was a VM or Tdi. It might have been listed under "landrover" (one word).

Yep saw that one, out of an 88 range rover, dont know much about these motors besides that my GFs dad had one and had alot of problems with the turbo on it.

The VM engine fitted to some rangies have a poor reputation - best to avoid.

you sure about the cost of 4BD1 parts?
I've found them very cheap - from the Isuzu truck dealer, not LR!!

Did well cal415. 300TDI, auto+transfer. That was the one advertised in outerlimits for 2k! not bad!
How much did you end up paying in the end?

Hey Cal,

Im also generous, I'll give you $50 and a slab for the auto if you want and Ill even come and get it.

Id be putting it in the 90ish thingy that your building though as they are a great box and absolutly fantastic off road.

I hounestly thought id never like driving off road in an auto but mine in 1st LR CDL locked rolls down hills slower than a standard gutlux or pootrol and with torque multiplication of the torque converter in low range it climbs anything that it can grip on.

It couldnt be a better combo and they are relativly strong although mine has a slipping sprag at the moment and Im too scared to find out how much its going to cost to fix it.

Thus im happy to give your ZF a good home under my Disco.

what is this pickings for all or something? At least offer him the transport cost of the engine and motor, I think thats a fair price for a gearbox.

The new flywheel I'm offering sells for around $500 from the UK.
The clutch kit is another $550 from LR.

That equals a fair bit more than freight ;) .

I wasn't having a go at anyone. Just observing the fact he hasn't even got the engine or box yet.

Just getting in first :D .

BTW, I'd second the auto comment by mcrover so I think Mick should be keeping it.

Well after all that the seller has ****ed me around and now i am back on the hunt for a reasonably priced motor and box.

And anyone who frequents outer limits, Lucas(his username) was the guy who stuffed me around and said that he would sell me the motor, i then ran around trying to organise money and freight only to have him ignore my PMs and SMS's then after a few weeks without contact when i had given up anyway he tells me he is stripping the motor for parts and selling it locally. so a big **** YOU to Lucas from the Outer limits forum!

Anyway, Back on topic, anyone know where i can get one locally for a good price? i am thinking of buying a wrecked TDI disco now but there dont seem to be many going at auction.
