I have a d1,3.9ltr v8, it has twin electric fans on the front of the radiator plus the viscos fan. are these for the A/C? and can i wire the electric fans up to a thermo switch and get rid of the viscos fan? Thanks Chris

The electric fans are for the aircon. They will not flow enough air to get rid of the engine driven fan. Unless you drive in deep water alot or mud then in my opinion it is not worth removing the viscous fan.

You can adapt thermo fans from an EL Falcon to replace the viscous fan.

I've done it on a Rangie but not on a Disco, although I doubt there is much difference.

Pretty straight forward. Thermo fans pull ALOT more air than the viscous fan.

These fans are for both the A/C [running continuosly whenever A/C is on - to push enough air past condensor, so it works properly] and they will turn on automatically if engine temp rises above a preset value to "help" the V.C engine fan and stay on or turn on (without warning) when engine is off if the engine temp rises above a certain temp.......they remain on till temp drops.

I wired up the electric fans for the aircon on the disco I had to assist the main cooling fan as crawling in low range first with a horse float on the back up parramatta road on a 40+ degree day was a bit much for the cooling system. Traffic was so bad that I couldnt even get up to high idle in 1 low....

I wired them up via a relay and switch so that they worked as per normal when in the off position (air con could still turn them on as needed), when in the first on position they were controled by a thermo sensor and in the second on position they were on untill the ignition was turned off.

made all the difference for the first low crawl when loaded at idle situation.

Can we have a better circuit description (circus diagram?) of your mod?

I'd like to get rid of my viscous, too. Don't think i need it where i live, ran the ED Falcon for a year without one with no probs.

There's no traffic to impede forward progress...

Personally, if you plan to remove the viscous fan, leave the condenser fans in place and with the original wiring.

The condenser fans run - not only when the AC is on - but also when the engine temp gets too high - it's often not required - but it's a bloody great safety net - when it is required.

I would put a pull thermo fan on the back face of the rad - (basically where the viscous fan is). Get the biggest/best thermo fan you can/that will fit.

The condenser fans are not good enough to carry out efficient engine cooling on their own.
