Anyone removed their EGR system? If so what were the benefits if any? I have read an article recently which suggests it improves performance.

Hi All
I thought it was not used on the TD5 and the ECU left it in a permanent closed position.

Hi Ian,

I put the blanking plate, havn't done full removal yet, going to do like that: EGR bypass kit (http://www.td5alive.com/egr.php). Benefits... less rubbish, might be longer engine life, can't tell now. I think this mod from "Must Be Done" category.

Cheers,
Ruslan

Have a search, this came up once before. Theres a really good post about a year ago on Outer Limits too, search the Rover board there.

I ended up reconnecting mine suffice to say after reading that article. No material difference anyway.

I put a blanking plate in, vehicle ran like rubbish for ages, which was exacerbated and confused by the head problems I was having. It was still running badly after the head was fixed so I took the blanking plate out and it runs much better now!

Exhaust
Gas
Recirculation

It is meant to improve economy and burn unburned fuel in exaust gasses.

Can be good if fuel is good quality but can be bad if fuel quality is not so good as thats when you get the carbon and crap build up.

Its purely to reduce exhaust emisisons whilst idling and cruising and to make the engine quieter at idle, by reducing the oxygen content which delays combustion which makes for lower combustion temps. It has the opportunity to incompletely burn the fuel which continues to burn in the exhaust manifold or leaves as soot if the catalytic converter (if installed) doesn't burn it all. It sends soot back into the inlet manifold too.
