Snorkel for Series 2a

Hi,
I am interested in getting a snorkel onto my Series IIa.

Has anybody done this? If so, can you share how it has been done.

Any shops in the Brisbane area who can do this mod?

What filter do you have - still the crappy oilbath filter?

I have a hilux filter housing fitted in the passenger side guard (where the heater would be on a SIII), and I got an exhaust shop to bend me up a snorkel from exhaust pipe for about $50.

Apparently it is possible to remove the vented top of the oilbath filter and replace it with an elbow to connect to a snorkel. But the oilbath is only good for removing rocks, so it is a good idea to replace it with something that actually works.

You're kidding right? I though that the oil bath was one of the best filters for removing crap, just not the best for airflow. I remember that there was an option oil bath crank breather for use in harsh environments for the 2.25. Also, I remember hearing that people in the territory used to fit them to holdens and the like, as the paper filters just would not last.

Well, while waiting for response I starting thinking about options in case I am on my own on this one.

I would replace the 'crapy' oil bath filter with this: http://www.knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm

It takes standard K&N filter (which is washable, etc), is sealed and heat shielded.

Uses less space than the current filter. One end goes to the carb, the other to some bendrel bend exhaust pipe (uhm... I am thinking of some nice stainless steel one, but I am worried it won't look right, maybe any pipe will do ... just need to find some khaki paint) and on top a dust bowl.

Not sure if I will bring it from driver side or passenger side. Pictures I have seen from original army 2a trucks have them on the driver side.

You could allways put one on each side. i have seen a couple or defenders with these made from stainless..looks real good to i think..

No I am definitely not kidding - I work in filtration R&D. The design of the oilbath filter means it is only really effective at removing very large particles. I haven't measures it, but I am pretty sure it would only be as good as a cyclonic pre-cleaner.

K&N filters aren't much better.

Best option is to make one.

I used 3'' exhaust tube and mandrel steel bends.

Nice and easy, only took a few hours to do and cost about $15 in steel.

You will need a new filter box - look around he wreckers for something maybe even a disco or RR one with a 3'' adaptor from a plumbing shop on the end with some silastic and rivets.
