do maxidrive drive plates fit fine with std axles?
is there a difference between front and rear drive plates ?
and
do the maxidrive drive plates for front and rear have the screw on sealable cap?

well i had them on a 91 defender and they were the same front and rear and were all screw thread . I had maxi drive shafts in rear and standar cv shafts in front. They are made to fit the original axles and shafts anyway.

Are you doing this just to get oil bathed wheel bearings?
When I converted the front on my 1994 Disco (rubber drive flange caps) I thought I would have to get new drive flanges but the rubber caps have not leaked yet.
That was about 10000kms ago so if there was no oil in them I would have thought the bearings would have failed by now.
I haven't done the rear yet.

Pretty sure that the oil bath wheel bearings was an original 110 thing and changed to grease only bearings with later Defenders. So wouldn't worry too much about changing end caps straight up, the rubber/plastic ones should keep the oil in for a while.
Except, of course, that your splines are probably worn and ready for a change anyway.:D

i would try new rubber caps, should hold the oil in, still a good idea to grease the bearings when reassembling as it can take a while for the oil to make its way over and into the hub
i fitted maxi axle and drive flanges to the rear of mine and still greased the bearings, spose its all washed out by now

I am all for oil bathed bearings after the rears disintergrating about 100km from Port Hedland. However, someone told me the axle housing rusts on the inside, and without a seal the rust contaminated oil gets into the bearing and causes premature failure. Anyone heard of this?
back to your original question inc - what Reads said. The short maxidrive flanges fit standard axle shafts. Maxi produce a longer axle shaft and flange that spreads the pressure and is stronger.

I found an old brochure..
They make/made 3 types
Series Landies Part no MDE 571
Coil sprung Landies with rear drums (5X 10mm bolts on hub) P/no MDE5806
R/R Disco /Defender from 1992 MDE 859 - You remove the oil seal in the spindle and replace with an earlier one so the spline is lubricated.
All are machined for the thread on cap

Rover narrowed the hub width when they went to the weak cv's, which have a shorter stub shaft, eg. Disco I with 24 spline half shafts.
Maxi-drive have a different drive flange for the front of these vehicle to allow the stronger, early count 110 cv's (with longer stub shaft) to be fitted. New bushes and half shafts are also need to fit these cv's.
Disco II (I don't know much about them) could be different again.
