While doing the tappets the other day I removed the glow plugs so as to be able to turn the wheel with the landy in gear to rotate the crankshaft, all that was fine and job done ok.
When I removed the glow plugs though, 3 were showing a whitish deposit indicating that they were doing their job, the other one (second cylinder from front) had some oil on it! I naturally thought the worst.

Though in running it to work and stuff, all seems fine, it dosnt seem to run rough (well, any rougher than a 94 200tdi) and on startup there is the usuall puff of ordinary looking smoke, not blue, not black, just smoke. when out on the road I certainly cant see any smoke behind the vehicle. after starting, when ticking over in the drive there is no smoke produced.

Any ideas?

It could be that cylinder that had just been fuel up before you switched it off - you know before it had chance to fire

..............or maybe not;)

I wouldnt worry, most of the time you wont actually need the glow plugs to be able to start the car.

thanks for the replys,
no i'm not bothered about the glow plugs as such, it's just the oil in the cylinder that had me going!

As I found out with the Disco i just bought.

I'd been letting the glowplug timer run down before starting. On the weekend I took the batteries out of the car to clean up the battery trays and found a thick brown wire with the terminal corroded off. It appeared to have been off for a long time before I bought the car.

The wire seemed to go to a timer relay of some sort mounted at the rear of the fuse box.

Langy was visiting with his 300Tdi so I thought I'd ask him what it was.

He told me it was the glowplug timer. So I'd been waiting for the glowplugs for no reason. :D

Not that glowplugs would be required in Derby anyway.
