Plastic dowel for the head locating pins

Oil in the injector harness

Cracking radiators

Oil coolers splitting

exhaust manifold studs snapping

Head gaskets

That'll do.

Not that 300tdi's were any better to start with:angel:

I thought I read/heard somewhere ... 'praps here

Exhaust manifold studs breaking is a common problem on a lot of alloy head diesel engines and is not specifically a Land Rover thing.

What do people mean when they say "early"? What things were fixed/changed at what date(s)? How can you tell if these things have been fixed?

Kevin at Rover-tech tells me that they updated a lot of the problem parts in the MY 2003 TD5s.

Namely: 1. Different alloy in the head
2. Steel locating dowels, not plastic
3. Different oil cooler
4. Other stuff that I can't remember, may have included different injector harness

Sounds like basically a good engine design with a few stuff-ups that they fixed later on.

As mentioned in other threads, mine is in for some *VERY* expensive repairs at the moment and will have the 2003 upgrade stuff put on to replace the original components, this includes the steel locating dowels and the update oil cooler.
