hey everyone, being still relatively new to Landys, i need your help and experieence!!! someone pointed out to me that when i was on site which was quite dusty, almost like sand, only my rear two wheels were diving my car - infact my rear wheels were slightly spinning and my front two were absolutley stationary... what does this mean that my 4WD system is buggered?!? HELP???

Depends if you did not have diff lock in (working on the basis you have a coiled truck) then only one wheel needs to spin to stop the other from turning
When you put diff lock in then you only need one wheel on each axel to spin to stop the others from moving.

so 4wd wont work unless i engage my diff lock? i thought so, i just thought i'd bite the bullet (with the risk of looking a numpty) and double check, you see, the disco is my first proper car (after running around university in bangers!) but i didn't receive a owners manual so, i'm basically learning my car from scratch and from the help of everyone on this site, i thought i had to do that but it's hard to check that the diff lock is also working...

your best bet would be to keep a look out in the upcoming events section of the forum :D
next time a trip is planned in your area why not jump in and have a go with the rest of the guy's from here:D ;)
best way to learn about the car and the driving of it

when i was working for Land Rover experiance on training days . The first thing we would ask people is how many wheel drive is a land Rover. And they would all say 4 wheel drive. So we used to drive the front wheel up a bank so the rear wheel was off the ground and then try and drive it. Of course it would not drive and we used to say No its one wheel drive , becuase one wheel in the air and it goes no where.
But with diff lock we used to cross axle the truck and get a wheel on both alxes in the air. Then the car (as we used to tell poepl ) it is now two wheel drive:D
For real 4 wd you need lockers :D

Also, i'm coming to the stage where i'm going to be given a company car, so comes the dilemma that we'll be selling the missus' ford festiva, so we have the option of selling the disco and buying a defender/series or using the money from the missus' car and kitting out the disco... any views on this??? basically we'll only want it for very short distances and weekends away...

...............don't drive on tarmac with the diff lock on though, only use it when you are in the rough stuff/sand etc.,

Resale value on a Disco is quite low nowdays, so you may loose quite a bit on it. If it were me I'd use the dosh from 'er in doors' car to spend on little toys for the disco
................unless of course you came up with a real bargain on a defender

usually trips up your way or the GC... just keep an ears and eyes open.
or if interested the GC boys will probably be running a driver awareness program in the next 6 weeks or so

If you can get a ride in a Defender do. They are not like a Disco. Very agricultural but heaps more fun. Dosh wise you might be better off spending on the toys.

Also, here is a part of the land rover website where you can download the Disco 1 user manual, I think I even have it on my computer somewhere in small pieces if you are interested.
