Hey guys,

Either someone has put a loud cat in my Td5 defender's tank or my fuel pump is whining very loudly... It starting whining yesterday and I’m buggered if I know why... I replaced the fuel filter today hoping it would fix the problem.....and it did work for about 5secs as the pump filled the filter, but as soon as any pressure built up it got really really loud again.. Any suggestions?? a replacement pump is about $800! I'm hoping it's something simple..............like that ever happens.

How long can a cat survive in 60L of diesel?

Cheers
Toby.

By the way it's a 2002 defender and has only done 60,000K.

Hi Guys
Do these TD5 pumps have a pickup screen????
If so its possible that a diesel fungus/bacteria is thriving in the tank and blocking the screen and making the pump work harder.
Toby do you use a diesel treatment? If not try one for a few tankfulls, they will kill the "diesel bug" if you have one. Many brands available, see Supercrap or Repco, dont get the elcheapo,Diesel Power or similar is good.
I use Primary Lubrication Gen4 Multi-function fuel stabaliser, has other propierties that are benefecial.Upper cylinder lube,anti-diesel bug,de watering, added fuel economy.Never had any diesel probs in both vehicles.

Well it looks like it's the fuel pump.... I've spent all day looking for any other fault. I'll drop the tank tomorrow to have a look at the pump itself. Does anybody know of a good place to get a Defender Td5 pump in Brisbane? M.R want $900 for one, can u get them much cheaper than this??

Check the fuel line fittings at the filter. It could be sucking air in at that point, causing the pump to cavitate.

Yeah I've tried all 4 fittings on the filter but i can't find a leak... It's actually kinda hard to tell if the fittings are leaking becuase they just clip on... anyway to be sure??

Try 4x4 Spares in Melbourne - they ship anywhere. Details in vendors /suppliers area.

Suggest you take the pump out and clean it thoroughly with petrol or break cleaner.
Take all the diesel out, filter it. Clean the tank - you might have some sand in there.
Put everything back together, drive a few km's and it should be all right.

Btw while you got your tank down anyway, put this in:

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll defiantly give the tank and pump a good clean. Do the clip on fittings on the fuel filter have o-rings?

Fingers crossed this works..

I met a bloke with a TD5 and it was making a hell of a noise from the fuel filter, he found out from ROVERTECH that it was the filter fitted, it was a cheap after market and & didnt have enough holes for the fuel to get through, thus making the sound it made.

Hi Toby
Try Karcraft in Silverwater (Syd) there price for a Disco TD5 pump is $498 + freight to you much better than a dealers price.

For some reason the Disco pumps are much cheaper than the Defender ones, and I don't think they are interchangeable.

Yeah MR in Brisbane quoted around $500 for the disco fuel pump and $900 for the defender!! I just removed the fuel tank this morning...but how do i get the pump out of the tank? it says in the manual i need a special tool but i'm miles away from any landrover place! any tips...... I'm close to attacking it with the screw driver....

Does it have a large ridged locking ring like the Discovery?

What I planned on doing if mine went mammaries up, was to knock it around with a drift of some sort & if the ring fractured, I would refit it with a large suitable stainless steel hose clamp locking it back together.

Very big pipe wrench was another option but like most things one only finds out what works at the time.

Good luck anyway.;)

Didn't know you needed a special tool. I just undid the 6 (or 8?) screws around the top with a big Phillips Head screwdriver, and it just pulled out easily. (2002 130 TD5 BTW).

Thanks guys I just got it out! It looks pretty clean in the tank and the pump only had a few tiny bits of gunk in it....Something tells me this isn't going to fix my problem.... o'well at least i can make an access hole for the pump now...

I'll keep you posted

Cheers

I have a 2002 130 defender and its fuel pump died completely after a short illness. It also got quite noisy. I was out of town when my wife drove the truck to work and to a stand still. I think it is more than coincidental that the noise in mine got worse after a running on a very low tank. Get it fixed sooner rather than later as in my experience they don,t squeal much before they die

This bloody BMW pump does not like any little tiny bit of dirt/sand whatever...

Well It’s unfortunate but i had to buy a new pump.... the good news is that at least i have a spare! and now i have a nice easy access panel to get the pump out if i need to.....but hopefully this new pump lasts a while..

Thanks for all your help

Cheers
Toby.
