As the title says can it be done?
Can the pistons come through the top?
only doing the pistons and rings

Pretty sure it can. I'm certain I saw a 300 Tdi with one piston removed at KLR Auto some months ago. The cylinder was undergoing honing or ridge removal in situ by Bob Rea Engine Reconditioners.

It can be done like this, but its not exactly a rebuild though is it.

Well this is the normal method of removal and refit.

Yep. The problem is removal of the oil pump pick up pipe and moving the oil pan out of the way, since the front axle etc won't let you remove the pan completely.
Otherwise it's just another 4 cyl LR engine.

What what? what's that you say Langy, the sump can't be removed completely? I can't say I've looked at my D1 close enough (yet) but one of the items on my maintenance list is to remove the sump, clean it up and reseal it (it's leaking, fancy that).
Tell me it's not so before I go outside with the touch and look.

The problem is the crankshaft, the front axle won't let you drop the pan sufficiently to clear it. Mind you I did my rebuild on-the-street, and on an incline at that. Might be able to remove the pan if you jack the chassis up a little. (Like when replacing springs)

Is this a Disco TDi - if so the sump should come off without any problem.

Without removing the track rod, and without jacking the car up, I couldn't get the pan completly out - I did slide it out of the way whilst I replaced the crank, but I just couldn't get it past the axle. Mind you I had the gearbox seperated and supported on a trolley nearby. That could have interfered. I try to forget the horrors of rebuilding on-the-street.

We get Tdi sumps off with the engine still in place, no dramas at all.

ok the pistons are out now the next question is .
How much wear can you have on your pistons ?It looks like when the engine overheated its caused the pistons to wear badly on the walls of the cylinder bore.We havnt honed the bore yet thats tomorrow, but im hoping i dont need new pistons too.:(

Have you measured bore wear and ovality with an internal micrometer? What about the pistons with an external micrometer?

or use a bore (telescopic) gauge and measure with a micrometer.
Do you have a workshop manual?

STOP. If there is any evidence of piston skirt nipping the bores, then pull the engine and rebore it, fit oversize pistons and you will be fine. DO NOT waste your time with honing these Tdi's at this stage of wear/ damage unless you want a an 'oil pump' for an engine .
You have been warned.
