I am looking for some power at the back of the defender for some 55w lights..

Opened up the back little covers where the lights are, and noticed this ORANGE plug sitting there doing nothing.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

What is it ? what turns it on (can not get any power to it) and I can not find it on my raves CDs.

Also if anyone knows where I can get constant power from at the back of the def, so I can run these lights off a switch without running my own, I would be very very happy... I hate running wires inside cars.

Any help would be great!!!!

Ok having a quick look on the Rave CD
I think it is the L/H side trailer light for the rear Fog light

So then I should be able to turn on the fog light switch and it should kick in ..

will try that... its passenger side.

Check fuse boxes, might be blank fuse (or socket) there for powering orange wire ;)

OK ... ummmm :wasntme: someone else musta tested it ...

Yeah so its the left hand fog light trailor hitch .....

Umm so do you recon it could hand a 55w / 4amp light on the end of that wire ?

AND ... seeing the key needs to be at turn II or more, what would happen if I have the car on at that position for a long time .. I heard its not good for the power system... ? or am I wrong on that ?

Nothing personal :D :D

Had a mate who was car wise and had to replace the bulb in his fog light after it failed an MOT. He replaced it and was on his 4 bulb replacement untill turned up and pointed out that he did not have the lights on and thereofre the fog light would not work. :D :D

The problem is Land Rover are built for so many marklets and they put so much more wiring than is needed. So you may find if you trace it back to its sorce, That the other end may not be pluged into anything. And to trace it back will be difficult ,because as soon as it goes into the chassis you will lose which one it is.

Yes I think it is for the rear fog lights - don't know if it would be for the trailer or just the rear bumper

You wouldn't want to leave it on Posn 11 for long, but now you have traced it back - you could always now disconnect the live supply from the back of the fuse board - and run it to a permenantly live (via a fuse) or a posn 1 live supply.

this is probably a different question Ladas,,
but these days,,
does the ignition "left on" really matter?

I wanted more light at the back when reversing and found a spare plug on the right side. I then noticed a spare fog plug on the left which is what that probably is. Turn the engine on and then turn light switches on before flicking fog light switch check for power.

I know what you are saying - but I still think that power running through the ignition circuits in posn II isn't a good thing without the engine running.

On certain cars fuel pumps and pump relays will be energised, certain other parts also - on a petrol vehicle I still would never do it as I am still of the opinion that the ignition circuit could be damaged.

On TDi's - 5's I am not sure how the glow plug circuit works, so I guess I am just erring on the side of caution.

............and I am old, and old fashioned ;)

What colours are the wires? LR use a standardised colour code based on the Lucas system. That will often help identify wiring.

leaving the ignition on will not damage electrics.......but it will flatten your battery.........

if you have a vehicle with points ignition.......the only time it will do damage to leave the ignition on is if the points are closed.......
it will fry the coil........

oh...and flatten the battery.......

dont do it......dont leave any vehicle with ignition on.....unless the engine is running......

my solution to what you want to do is......
run a simple fused power feed to a relay.....and switch the relay on using a feed from the reverse light.......

and run the wire along the chassis rail...under the vehicle instead of in it......
and for a bit of extra safety.....run the wiring through some split condiut and makes sure its cable tied
along the way so there is no movement/vibration.......

heheh funny you mention that it will flatten your battery, I got it all working and tested it tonight, but will change the layout tomorrow so it will not flatten my battery .... lucky I had a steep driveway, I just roll started it!

The rear of the defender on both the left and right sides has the fog light and reverse light plug pre-wired.
They just swap it over, I assume, for RH or LH drive markets. (and only use one fog/reverse light at the rear).
On the right side, I think it maybe under the floor???(maybe even taped up?), there is a constant power feed - from memory it was a bullet style connector, and a purple wire with trace, about a 4mm gauge wire.
I did what your wanting to do, I found a constant feed, and via a relay switched lights on with reversing light / or work light switch...

Will it handle a 55w bulb?????

OK 2 questions, Wire size and fuse size.
What fuse supplies it?? check it, if its 7.5amp or larger you will be ok. if not then dont try.

Fuses are rated to stop the wiring melting in a load or short. The correct fuse should always be used.

Have a look and let us know, i'm curious
