looking to put the TD5 on some LPG.saw the eco-shot dealer and had a chat about it over the weekend.sounds like a good thing but for the price.4000 to have it fitted and tuned.ok you get 2000 back but thats still 2000 out of pocket.now, next week the better halfs Disco 1 V8 is going on gas.this is only going to cost 2500 and you get 2000 back so in the end it costs only 500 fitted and tuned. the eco-shot is only boost referenced like a rising rate fuel regulator.as boost goes up more gas gets feed in.there is no mixer and no converted used and only a tank to hold 30 liters of gas.in the end you get about half the stuff you would with a petrol setup at 3 times the price. so has anyone got other LPG-diesel kits fitted up and what was the price.

I have done some calculations based on a 15% saving after fitting gas.
Pre gas using 80l tank @ $1.25/l diesel = $100
after gas and 15% saving cost $1.25/l (- 15% of 80 l) =$85.00
Plus gas 8l (10% mix) @ 0.55c/l = $4.40
Total $85+ $4.40 = $89.40
So a saving of $10 per 80l tank
If cost to you to have system fitter is around $2000 that equates to 200 tanks of diesel/gas before any saving is made...other than improved power.
It all depends now on how many tanks of fuel you use in a year.
The final decision is up to you.

It would be cheaper to chip the ecu, fit an uprated intercooler and a large bore exhaust.

Ah, but you have to take into account the extra fuel you can take on board.
If you added a second fuel tank or a larger fuel tank to the chip, intercooler, exhaust; I reckon the costs would become more even.

Plus you could transfer a lot of it to the next car even if it's not a Landy.

hey why install it on your car just buy a second vehicle with all the mods done cheaper as anything you spend on the car wasted dollars

any mod done to a car does not add to value but does that stop any of us???I know it doesn't stop me and most of us here spend more than we should;) I tend not to tell the other half but still give her a hard time about what she spends on shoes, clothes etc

Hi Moparrangie,
Would you mind telling me where you got the quote for LPG conversion for the V8 Disco 1 please?
I'm in Adelaide.
The only gas conversion place that would give me a quote said they would charge $5000. I quickly forgot about it at that stage.
Other companies I rang just gave me a flat NO!
(For interest I get about 19L per 100km out of my Disco 1 V8, towing a 1 tonne trailer at 100 to 110 km/h. This is slightly LESS than I used in a 5L NC Fairlane at 20L/100 km over the same route with the same trailer).
Thanks

An extra 30ltr's of lpg wont get you anywhere, you have to run both fuels together to get a bit extra power/ economy, at the cost of the conversion its a false economy. Might be ok if you are carrying large loads as in a truck or bus but wasted on a passenger vehicle. I dont see people rushing to have it done ?

Check out this economy page (http://www.dieselgas.com.au/economy.htm) from DieselGas (http://www.dieselgas.com.au/home.htm).
They're pretty convincing about how much further your tank goes and how much money you save on LPG versus Diesel.
And just for comparison, Graeme Cooper has a 36 litre diesel tank (http://www.lrexpert.com.au/custom.php?page=defender) listed for $500 and some.
I'd love to have the cash to give the LPG into diesel thing a go, but all my money goes into maintenance. The bugger is that I'm also doing the kilometres these days that it might actually be economically viable too. Not like the last LPG installation I had done on the F100.
Cheers

Did you get a satisfactory reason why the refused?
I'm guessing it is because of the type of fuel injection on your engine. I don't have personal experience, but have heard of them backfiring, which tends to destroy the airflow meter.
If you only want to run on LPG, not retain duel fuel, then it won't be a problem.

Thanks for reply,
Of the LPG conversion places I rang, two claimed "too many problems trying to get the LPG system to work properly with the the existing engine computer" and the third (Parnell Gas) told me "we do not have a kit for the Discovery".
I suspect too, that they all have so much work now with the $2000 subsidy, that they can pick and choose their customers.
