So, I have a 12v computer now that I have made from bits and pieces given and found ect (cost me $23 so far with a new case :))

I am now looking for a touch screen ~8inches and a GPS mouse.

I have looked at ebay & MP3 car and am still at a loss as to what to buy??

Can someone point me in the right direction or give us any reccomended brands etc???

Thanks guys

Dave.

I think any of the ebay usb touch screens should be ok if you check the feedback, i just bought another gps for my pda from the uk, $57 for a sirf 11 ps2 gps mouse with pda/cigi adapter cable, seller is nexgen sales.

I recently bought a 8" touchcreen from e-bay for $300 delivered - works ok and has 3 inputs so I can have it connected to the computer, DVD and something else and switch from the screen. If you set it to normal computer resolution everything is too small so standard resolution of about 800x600 works really well with the screen being beasy to read. It is a bit hard to operate the computer with the touch screen when driving as you are bouncing around a bit - this is not an issue with the screen itself - I can operate the computer easily when stopped and use the onscreen keyboard for typing if required.

I bought a sirf III gps mouse on e-bay for under $68 delivered and it works really well.

Thanks guys.

There is an ebay seller in the US selling Lillyput screen at ~275 to my door which is pretty well Priced I think.

Gary do you have any Pics of your screen setup?

How is the size? To big, too small or just right??

I just don't want it to dominate my dash or vision.

Dave.

Got another question,

Do I want an XGA or TFT screen?? Is there any difference.

Most seem to be TFT

Thanks,
Dave.

XGA is a resolution specification, TFT is a technology used in LCD's...

a TFT screen can have XGA resolution, but so can other types of LCD.

I hope that makes sense!

I haven't permanently mounted my screen yet but I can mount it as can be seen in the pictures and it is quite stable. The Freelander dash is very flexible and I have a few options for placement. Where it is, it is nice and close and I can operate the touchscreen without having to stretch. Also it is out of the sun. I think a smaller screen would be too small to operate the computer because the icons end up being quite small - I have the touch screen pen but it also works OK with a finger but Ozi-explorer menus are a bit small. I think an 8" screen is about right.

See E-bay Aust item number 160101517626 (sorry the system wouldn't let me copy and paste the link in) for the creen I bought.

I looked at the Lilliput screen and I think it is a little better than the one I bought but I think the Lilliput only has one video line in. The car radio in my car is also a DVD/MP3 player so I also wanted extra video lines in for this and maybe later a rear view camera so I went for what I have which is fine.

Hi Gary that looks great.

Well done, seems to be a good size.

What jsp didn't tell you is that he made the surround from an old P38A console. A nice job he made of it, too.
