Has anyone bought one of Jaycar's OBD-II scanners? If so, what are they like on LR?

It's in the latest catalogue but not yet on their website. Cat. No. QP-2294

Well they're OBD-II CANbus so they may at least let you get the Engine ECU fault codes. Whether it lets you clear codes or see anything else (SLABS, BCU, etc) I would be doubtful. Also if the system is from a USA based one it probably won't talk to the Td5 (or any other diesel) ECU and may only work with SAE and not ISO OBDII like the LR's.

I dont think it will will work with the TD5.
I bought a Geniscan GS400 off ebay, it is OBD compliant but does not work with the TD5.

I knew I'd seen the Jaycar one before http://www.auteltech.com/products.htm

It's a Geniscan GS300 and it is only a Code Reader and is for USA market.

As per dm_td5 I have bought the rovacomlite. Lots of dollars but at least it will save me dollars in the long run. For me I think It has paid for itself already. I have had a few issues to sort out with my Defender (ecu mapping & ABS), all these would have cost me if I had to take her to a LR mechanic. I have always done my own mechanical work in the past, so to continue I have had to make the change to the current technology.

Yes, I knew they'd only address engine fault codes. That's why I've not bought one in the past.

The E-bay ones don't read the TD5. They were tested. I was going to buy one. Don't know about the other engines.

At least with Jaycar, you can try it and return it if it doesn't work. Or you can try it out at the shop.

Note this bloke in Brisbane is claiming he uses them in his workshop and that they work on LR to clear faults.

I have one I don't need if anyone wants an unused secondhand unit.
I bought it for my nissan shopping trolley, but it's too dumb to talk to the scangauge.

I've had an email fromn him:

I have used this product a number of times on models including Range Rover 95>02 (P38s) Land Rover Discovery Defender & Freelanders, we have remove fault codes on series 2 Disco 99>04 faults including Traction Abs Hill descent, we have also removed Eas faults on Range Rover 95>02 models, this is not a comprehensive machine that is as capable say as the autlogic or test book but it is a handy tool to have in the glovebox when those problems do arise as being a Land Rover owner you are only well aware of.

Cheers

Anyone know him or his workshop?

has anyone tried the Scangauge II on the 2007 Defenders yet? I have just ordered a new Defender and I'm looking around for some toys to add to it.

I bought a ScanTool Elm Iso obd-II compliant scanner. Only cost $60 and according to the website has been tested on a 2004 Defender. That is until you read the support page threads. Unfortunately it doesn't work on Land Rovers so its now a paper weight:D
Steer clear of generic scanners, save your pennies and by a specific unit like Nanocom or Faultmate:thumbsup:

I tried my mates one on my series one disco which is OBD1 and it was great for me
depending how far you go or what you want out of the scanner
but basic intermediate codes and hard codes show up but you cant
reset them with it you have to refer to LR manual to reset codes

Prior to securing a Faultmate SV for the P38, I'd got all enthused about OBDII for my ageing Commodore Gen3...got an Elmscan plus some basic (free) software with it. It doesn't do a lot for the Commodore but I was surprised at the amount of info that came out of the P38 ...long/short tem fuel settings, indicated a dodgy O2 sensor, coolant temps etc etc. When used with Digimoto software you can make up your own virtual dashboard on the laptop...problem is you need a co-driver/engineer to monitor it all!

I borrowed one from Ladas - it wouldn't even talk to the P38A.

Just bought an Scangauge II - works very well and is quite easy to use. You can program the ECU to output engine power developed (its an addendum to the manual) - and you can see the Kw output as you go through the revs. On the way home at full throttle at 5200 odd rpm it saw 160kw (on premium...I always thought the 140 odd quoted seemed a bit low).

She runs up to 30 degrees of ignition advance!

My temp was 92-94 on the open road and up to 102 sitting in a car park for 10 mins idling after a trip.

Litres per 100k is interesting to watch, as it TPS, volts, air intake temp etc...its all good geeky stuff.

Cheers

PS. I cleared fault codes that were stored from when I changed the O2 sensors.

PPS. For those looking for compat' mine is an 01 build 02 complianced last of the rectangle headlight D2 V8 man

Ron asked the original question in relation to the Jaycar OBDII scanner. Reading the replies am still not sure if it works - a whole lot of information on other types though.

So - has anyone actually used a JayCar OBDII scanner on a P38/Freelander Diesel/TD5 and how did it go?

Thanks

I thought Lada's unit was the same as sold by Jaycar. However, it may just look the same. There are a lot with the same case.

Oh - ok - that one you used was a Jaycar? And it did not work on your P38?

I will not buy one then - the guy at Jaycar said I could not try it before I buy - but I could always return if it did not work as advertised - I didn't want the hassle.

Hey Garry, I've got one of the JayCar OBD2 scanners over here at QBN. You're welcome to borrow it. PM me for contact details.

BTW: I did plug it in to my P38A one day a few weeks ago. It returned a couple of codes but I didn't get around to looking them up. Must give it another go.

cheers
Paul.

Frankly, I doubt the value of the OBD2 scanners. They only look at engine codes, nothing else.

ok, ran the Jaycar OBD2 scanner on my P38A tonight and the only code it returned was P1667.

According to the Diagnostic Trouble Code library at Diagnostic Trouble Code Library (http://www.eobd2.eu/DTCL.asp)
P1667 for a Land Rover is "Anti-Theft Alarm serial link fault Drive cycle A:Signal out of range - below minimum"
Huh?

Nothing about the troublesome SRS "RH open circuit" or chequebook symbol on the HEVAC... bugger!

Guess I'm going to have to invest in one of those Faultmates after all when the finances can justify it.

Cheers, Paul.

Nice thought, But I can assure you the engine doesnt make 160kw stock

No torque sensor on the engine either... You'll find the system is using a "calculation" and trying to get close...

4x4v8. "works perfectly" might be stretching it. It certainly does report and clear engine codes but in my brief experience beyond that it doesn't help much with ABS and other codes. Also the manufacturer specific codes(e.g.p1590) seem to be non-specific unless further testing is done by more advanced diagnostic equipment.
Its better than nothing but not the "holy Grail".:(
