Got some great ones from a good friend in the Falklands, some of you may be familiar with the roads over there, others not.
i may add the driver was newly arrived and a female, as were all the 3 occupants.
For the uninitiated, they are in my opinion the roads from hell.
They have no MOT/rego checks over there.
Once outside stanley, the road to MPA(Mount Pleasant base) abd surroundng areas, is dirt ,gravel, badly cambered, elevated, adjacnet to minefields, subject to 100kmph plus cross winds, usually wet, punctures are an everyday event.
this is the result of a defender doing a head over turkey role,3 times i was told, on a down hill bend, gravelly section. I drove the road lots of times and I fugured 60kmph was max speed.( after all the 90 I was using has no tread, and as a ragtop is was buffetted horribly when the wind blew, making it go sideways a few times)

Here we go, the main injury was a cracked rib and shoulder, they survived

A good panel beater could fix this

the cracked rib and shoulder passnger is on the left of the photo

this one is for you keen eyed people, checkout the rust in the chassis

here is one i got a few weeks ago, this one was a fatal i was told.I think it was on the MPA road as well, if not it may have been the road to Goose green

Thanks pedro,
I suppose that makes sense, i laugh when people talk about bad aussie roads, they are nothing compared to the roads over there, I know the accident rate per capita is high over there, a bit like the sheep ratio.
I have driven a lot of miles on bad roads, here in the US and Europe, but nothing compares with falky roads, i used to have a beer with Bob the Builder the man responsible for the roads when i was over there, he kept reminding me they were fine if you drove the right way.

So when i thought I was speeding i was only doing 60kmph, one trip one of the guys kids started calling me miss daisy because of the way i was driving, 2 hrs to get somewhere they take 1 hr for.

G'day JohnE :)

Brilliant Photos:) the Defender held together well considering it was a high speed roll, it appears that the front pillars have been cut (during rescue??) I have seen several 110's and Defenders up at British Off Road near Nambour that have angled roofs:D some as much as 45 degrees;) it is suprising how well they hold together considering the construction method.

It does make you wonder if you really are safer in a low dollar eccono car, duel airbags or not  their speeds would be similar to the western Qld country roads, where ute rolls usually are fatal, (but they are mostly Eastern Asain vehicles)

The rusty chassis is an indication of the salt in the atmosphere and the damp. same problems on the Fraser & Moreton island vehicles

cheers

Definately not a good sight, hope mine NEVER ends up like that...

Personally i don't think there is such a thing as a dangerous road, only dangerous drivers. Drive according to the road conditions!

Same as guns don't kill - people do

i don't mind being called miss daisy at least i get there in one piece.
Uncle Ho i think Lyn said they cut of the top to get them out, i'll have to wait for her to get on here now she has a moniker to explain where and how in more detail.

Besides driving silly over there could mean you end up in here

and to repeat an older one the carpark here at the gun club should give you an idea of some of the stuff they use to surface the roads,

I was just going to post "Steve, make a roll cage" after seeing the ute!

Makes my blood run cold. Got the same thing walking around the Southern 4x4 wrecking yard looking for bits for a mate's Bundy.

Hi Uncle Ho,
I was the lucky front seat passenger who was in the red Rover. All 3 of us crawled out by ourselves and no cutting equipment was used. All you see is road damage! I think we got out at the rear drivers end but I'm stuffed if I know how. It's one hell of a way to wangle a ride in the RAF Sea King rescue chopper! We were only travelling at about 40 mph but with a strong cross-wind as John mentions. This was not on the road to MPA but one of the cruder roads that run between farms. The gravel was very thick and loose - like driving on huge marbles. By the way, a Defender went over on exactly the same corner the week before, also without fatalities. Moral of the story - wear your seat belts and drive slowly.

That is one thing that scares me with the 130. A lot of weight to put on the cab.

Wagons are a far stronger structure than a ute cab - seeing that ute is sobering and I'll defintitly be giving serious consideration to a roll bar in my ute.

I believe the cast alloy A pillars of the 110's are a very bad design structurally, they fail with a brittle snap without absorbing any energy compared to old galvanised steel A pillars of the series landies.

Hi John,

Just letting you know that the blue Rover went down on West Falkland during Sports Week. The driver was not strapped in and was thrown clear. He sufferred a broken leg and was airlifted to Stanley. The passenger was not injured as far as I know.

Still working on those GPS co-ordinates for you.

Not pretty. Got some good info on the Defender's construction now though. Alloy A pillars? It leaves me dumbfounded at the thought.

The second set of photo's gave me a dark chuckle.
Don't want to wreck you Landy? :(
Don't drive in the mine fields.

Shorty.
