Well it started out good, drove down to house at Phillip Island friday morning with not much traffic and weather was near perfect, saturday had some friends come down for bbq lunch - still all good. Friends go home 3.30 ish and best mate and wife who live on the island come over for bbq dinner and a few drinks - after this went down hill fast. About 4.30 ish my 3 yo was playing with my brothers little boy and i saw her fall funny and scream, i rush over to see blood spraying everywhere, she turns her hand over and its alsmost sliced in two :(, me freaks out and hugs her tight while wife gets towels and best mate intsructs us what to do, i pick her up and mate rushes us to local hospital. Wait a few minutes to see doctor and he looks briefly and almost uncaringly says we cant treat that here you need to drive to dandenong :(
Ambulances are all busy so we decide to drive ourselves after nurses bandage up the wounds- didnt see deep cut on big toe at the time.
1 hour drive to dandenong hosp and then have to wait while the junkies and white trash get seen to first:mad: we get seen to 10 mins later and doctor comes down to look but daughter is in shock and wont let anyone touch it , plastic surgeon comes and says hopefully we get her in theatre tonite, 11.40pm and specialist plastic comes in and says he was rushed in just to see her but a bus crash has meant some life threatening cases have turned and she wont get in tonite. after almost 2 days of fasting and us waiting she finally gets in and luckily for us they have their full surgical team on and a paediatric plastic surgeon that specialises in childrens hand injuries . while my wife was at the hospital with Kayley i did 2 trips back to Phillip island (after 3 hours sleep) 1 trip to pickup our 6 week old from friends who looked after her for 1 night and then back to the hospital to drop off baby to wife while i drive 1 hour home to unload our luggage and dog , pickup supplies and then back to the hospital in time to be told surgery was booked for 3.30pm monday. Surgery was about an hour as they didnt have to do a skin graft as they originally told us. We were able to take bring her home last night thankfully so we didnt have to spend another night in that place. doctors say that she will hardly have any scarring and it will be all just a bad memory.

I tell you now that seeing my little girl in that much pain felt like my heart was being ripped out and hope to never go thru anything like that again.

Good to hear all ended well and your right it is bloody awful, though you sound a lot stronger than I am. Last week when youngest had 4th birthday, toppled back and split the back of his head open, blood everywhere. Thank god for mummy as I faint at the sight of blood. 3 stitches later and all good. Best regards to the little un,

Regards

Glad to hear that all is going well. Never good when it is your own kids. How did she do the damage?
A lot of hospitals and doctors suck and need a good smack around the ears. As paramedics we need to empathise with the casualties and their families and provide as much support as possible to help them through. So they see it everyday. most parents do not.

Hoping she's going to be alright. It's awful when your little ones get injured. What happened - did she pick up discarded broken glass?

I've seen where idiots have smashed bottles in creeks near bathing spots.

Oh, how was her toe?

I remember taking our 3 yo to hospital with a broken arm. It took 8 hours before she was seen.

toe is good only needed a clean and stitch, hand was the worry, i had a similar injury to my hand when i was almost the same age and the doctors first reaction was to amputate my hand but luckily my parents demanded other opininions and was told about revolutionary new micro surgery otherwise i wouldnt be typing now. she cut herself on a sheet of stainless steel , we are still trying to figure out how it happened even though there were 5 adults within metres of her.

Sorry to hear about you daughter, Dandenong Hospital is not the best.
Kids are resilient, my daughter spent 3 weeks in the burns ward at Princess Margaret in Perth and has the scars on her legs to prove it, I still shudder when I think of that weekend, she doesn't care and is not put off by her scars.
I had a good experience at Cowes hospital, had to visit after mangling my finger on the GP weekend. I got preferential treatment over the drunk motorcyclist with a busted leg:D .

Really glad to hear it went well. As you say, you feel it worse when your kids are hurt than when you are.

I met a fellow once who had accidentally amputated his hand - all except the skin on the far side, in a sawmilling accident. The hand was microsurgically re-attached - worked 99% (he couldn't forcibly separate his fingers). I met him 20 years ago, and the surgery must have been 5-10 years before that.

I trust your daughter does even better.

Glad to hear that she will be alright and she will get over it much quicker than an adult would.

I have been to Dande Hospital many times and found them ok to getting me into a bed but then have to wait hours on hours to see a doctor that then just wants to do the same thing that all the others have done previously.

Im surprised you couldnt have just taken her to Wonthaggi as it is a great hossy but they might not have had the specialist care there but it would have been a better place to wait for a specialist to come.

All I can say is as much as it pains us and them when these things happen, we cant wrap them in cotton wool as then they lose their ability to bounce when they fall.

All the best to you and your family mate and hope shes back playing before too long again.

And to top it all off, with all the running around i've been doing (and not going slow either) my alternator is showing signs of trouble, dash lights starting to flicker and occasionally the tacho stops working for a few seconds :(

Sorry to hear, hope it all heals well. That kind of story just ties my guts in a knot.

Had my daughter waiting for two days on paediatric plastic surgeon when she bit through her lip. Hurt me much more than it did her.

Cheers

Glad to see it will mend up OK, I have no liking for children to be hurt, yes it will become a memory for her and the pain will go, but your memory of it will probably remain strong and emotional.

Thanks to all for the well wishes, it has taken up till this morning for me to be able to talk about it without bursting into tears, my parents were wrecks as well as having 4 sons they have seen their fair share of injuries between us.
Wife has taken it the worst i think as she had to stay at the hospital while i travelled between PI -hosp-home numerous times with our 6 week old who lucky for us is such a quiet little angel and didnt give us any trouble at all.

I'm having nightmares of flashbacks of when i saw her hand and everytime i think about it i shiver and my hand starts twitching - was right hand and almost the same age as when i did a similar injury to my right hand except i had tendon damage.

Best thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery go to your daughter. She is back now, in an obviously loving environment, home with mum and dad.
