Hi
Seem like a strage question but if I pull the gearbox from my RRC can I still run the engine?
I know if i can it won't go very far :D
I have never removed a gearbox so I don't know.

thanks

Unless you can mount the starter motor to something then no you cant Im gathering that you want to keep starting the motor to charge the battery

thanks for that.
oh well, no not for the battery just for someone to look at the engine while I remove the gearbox, (or try to).
It doesn't really matter I'll just leave the box swap till later.
Thanks

***edit *** I just thought, if the starter is the only reason couldn't i use a crank handle or bump/tow start?

I remember seeing a post here for a Youtube video of a bloke running his Landy engine whilst out of a car.

Your blonde aren't you?

When you clutch start the engine the wheels turn the axles which turn difs which turn the prop shafts. They turn the gearbox which turns the clutch, when you let out the clutch that then turns and cranks the motor, therefore the motor goes brum brum.

A bit like sitting on someones gut to make them fart, therefore if you surgically remove their stomach and try it, there wont be any farty noises, just a bloody mess on the floor, this would also happen with your V8 , no farting, just oil all over the floor and a bloody painful death.

Do you need a hand to remove the gearbox?

Oh No ! I just realised what I said
I really hope that was the most stupid thing I say today.
No, not blonde just a blonde moment.
Saying that if I had any hair left I wouldn't mind what colour it was!

Hey Ken that was real nice of you to offer help with the gearbox. I hope the FIL and I can manage if not I might give you a hollar.

I'll just try not to bump start the gearbox when I move it :D

This should be put in a thread all of it's own " the dumb things people say" thread.

you can do it with a series cause you can crank start it (Assuming it aint a diesel..)

if you want to look after the engine while the gearbox is out, remove the glow plugs/spark plugs and then wind the engine over by hand from the fly wheel or by the fan. do about 200 revolutions about once a week and unless its an isuzu this will run some oil through to where it needs to be..(put the plugs back in afterwards)

In reality just how long do you expect to have the gear box off for this to be a requirement?

Well it wouldnt matter if the box was out as the starter bolts to the block and not the box and yes you can run the engin without the box attached but the engin will sit back a bit without the box there to hold the back up so just chock it up and it shoud be fine

thanks lokka....

I just wanted to be able to show the block running but I want to remove the gearbox next weekend.

The engine wont be sitting for more than a month or two I hope.

So Steve
What does it boil down to???? Have you got a 4.4 or something and you are selling your motor????

hey andy, a 4.4 I wish !!!

No mate I have a donor vehicle and want the gearbox. I wanted to try and sell the engine but if you cant start it without a gearbox it would end up seizing. I don't know how long i'll have the engine before I get rid of it. I want the gearbox out next week.

So do you have a spare 4.4 lying around ;)

Arent the threads that the startermotor bolts screw into in the bell housing and not the engine plate? if so wouldnt there be nothing for the bolts to "bite " into?

Been a while since I pulled a V8 out.

depending on weather the locating holes in the block for the starter motor bolts are complete circles you should be able to put lock nuts on the back of the bolts behind the block and then your starter motor should stay put and you will be able to start the engine dont forget to put spring washers on before the nuts .Usually the thread for the starter motor bolts is within the bellhousing

I asked in a different thread but just to clarify.
the book says lift the box out, (remove floor plate).
OR
it was suggested I drop it out and jack the rangie a bit to get it out from under.

Anyone done either/both, which would be easier?
