Anybody have any idea who may have a reco alternator in the southern suburbs (Sydney). or is your average auto elec likely to have the parts to do the reco?

Mine died this afternoon and I'm supposed to be at work tomorrow & Tues then going away for 4 or 5 days Wednesday.

I've had it out and checked brushes etc, they seem OK but its not able to get above around 12.3V (Battery with lights/spotties on).

Battery light is not fully on, glowing about half I suppose.

most decent leccy places should have the parts on shelf, if not they will have something that will work..

its not a big job to change the front plate over and put a new back on an alternator if he doesnt have one with the right bolt up or pully on the front.. then changing the harness to suit should only take 30 mins.

try a wreckers? Theres a couple of good landy friendly ones in syd but I dont recall where they are or their names, (I treat sydney like homosexuals, They can do what they want as long as they do it way the hell away from me and dont involve me) Perhaps someone more local will know more.

On the guess that you have a 300tdi in your defender, and that it has a 100amp alternator, I can say that it will be highly unlikly that you will find a reco. In 05 I tried and couldn't find one nor did any of the auto electric places have any bits for the MM/Lucas alt. Conversion of other type alt for 300tdi difficult due to difference in mounting.

Solutions:
Coopers at Tempe had new MM 100amp sourced direct from manufacturer - $450 (ish)

Baxters at Silverwater: They have a listing on their website for a RH mount MM 120amp they say fits Diesel Disco. Presumably it would be the same for def.

TR spares and Karcraft presumeably have new in stock - prices unknown.

Or convert to Bosch!

Or convert to Bosch!

Would love to, but I don't think theres an easy conversion due to mounting sizes. (but someting I will put some time and effort into once I'm up and running again).

It's a 300Tdi Defender.

Bushie if you get this in time go and see Martyn, thats if he is still there , at Menai in that complex where Pizza Hut is, he can fix just about everything, and if he can't he;ll tell you.
Had a bit of auto elec stuff done with him when i lived there he is a genius.
after you drive, or walk in its to the right past auto one, along the back wall, that faces the bypass

OK, all good again.
Went down the route of new alternator (thanks Simon). When I get back will look into getting the old one fixed at my leisure to keep as a spare.

Depending how I look at it it's either been a pain or couldn't have happened at a better time.

We are going away Wednesday, but the wife has been taking it to work every day to North Parramatta - she's off this week

300TDi 110 & 100Amp alternator were not a standard fit IIRC....

Fitted a Denso A127-65

Figured 65 amp had been enough for the last 10 years, so would do for the future as well.

they may not as we brought 120 amp one in the uk although this was for our 200tdi, and we couldn't get the bloody thing to go on it was for a 200tdi, when we called the guy he was very apologetic he had sent us one for a disco......he mailed us a defender one and it bolted straight on.....so i dont know if this is the case for the 300's but its deffinatly the case for the 200

the 100amp 300tdi disco alt fits straight on as a replacement for the 65amp on a 300tdi defender.

Do you know which version of the 100amp 300tdi disco alternator it is? My list has three different 100amp alternators for disco -
AMR4248
AMR5425
YLE10113

And this one for 300tdi Defender -
AMR4249

I'd guess AMR4248, but that might be leaping to conclusions.:)

Sorry for the stupid question but if it became necessary to replace the alternator on my 300Tdi Defender would I be better off asking for a 100amp Disco version??

I run a dual battery system and Engel, Versa Light when out camping. I don't have any spotties.

My alternator at the moment is "OK" and is charging alright but it is at the lower end of the acceptable range so I'm thinking it is counting the days until it retires. It is probably waiting til I'm out the back of whoop whoop before it lets go.

Stupid question number 2: What are the repair/restore options on these things when they do throw in the towel?

thanks

If you do upgrade the alternator from the stock 65 amp unit to a 100+ amp model, make sure the charging wire will cope with the extra current that can be delivered otherwise a meltdown could be in order.

AFAIK... The charging wire should be ok. As mentioned before, on the 300TDi, the 100Amp unit just drops straight in.

On the 200TDi it's more involved!!! Not done one me-self on the 200 but it's something to do with the serpentine belt making life easier.

Alternators been with a mate for a while, delivered back today all fixed - no cost :)

So now I've got a spare (didn't actually realise he'd had it so long)
