Hi Guys
Just towed the Trytoo home, the missus rang up saying its stoped and there is smoke pouring out from under the bonnet. She wasnt game to open the bonnet,I told her let it burn, but as we all know **** dont burn.
By time I got there 1/2 hour later the temp gauge was still past the red, nicely cooked. She tells me she only checked the oil/water yesterday,I opened up the bonnet, smoke still coming out of the oil cap,no radiator cap,it was sitting next to where it was suppost to be.Im guessing she lost water as she was driving it yesterday, then overheated today due to low coolant.
It will now start, but very little compression and heaps of smoke, plus the head is cracked judging by the pressue coming out of the radiator.
Not wanting to fix it,this is its 3rd motor!!!!!
Will have to find her another vehicle pretty soon.

My Mum did that in her 2H powered 1982 Toyota troopy many years ago. Didn't do it any harm. I think it was off for a lot longer than that too.

DONT KNOW DONT CARE,but she drove it till it stopped.
It will start relucatantly and runs on 3,not much compression, heaps of smoke out the back, diesel vapours coming out of the radiator.
Anybody want it,make an offer,1988 Triton 4wd dualcab,1992 pajero turbo/intercooled 4D56T motor(originally was a 4D56 non turbo)with canopy,2 new front tyres.
Im stealing the dual battery setup and traxide controler!!!!!
I wonder if she would drive an isuzu County?????pushing my luck I think!!!!

Hey Andrew was your Trytoo a 2.5 TD? If so, other than when it died, did you have any overheating problems. My brother has a 2.5td and it overheats when it is working hard - like towing my Freelander back home after it has broken down. :( Is all Ok for normal driving around.
The radiator and thermostat are all in good nick and it would seem that the hot air has trouble leaving the engine bay causing backpressure that stops airflow through the radiator.
So just interested whether your car had similar issues when working hard in hot waether.
Thanks

Hi Gary
Yes its the 2.5D.
4D56 is the engine name.
When engine no2 went to heaven(dropped a valve) I got a thicker core than standard radiator made,as it did get hot on long hills.
The current motor rarely got hot, unless holding 5th gear on long hills with the trailer on.Im thinking this was an EGT issue as it had the grunt to do the hills, but a gear change to 4th fixed it everytime.See if he can change down without lugging for an improvement.
Our motor is actually a 92 Pajero with the intercooler,Tritons didnt get the intercooler till late on in the 2.8 motor. It is quite a performer,if not a bit stronger than the TD5,just a bigger hand grenade!!!!
Will let you know if I end up wrecking it,your bro may be interested in the turbo/intercooler/bonnet scoop/radiator I would need to check the turbo is still spinning freely incase coolant went thro it,I dont think it did, just havent checked.
Local wrecker offered me $200 for the vehicle with 2 new front tyres onit!!!!!!

Thanks - I was thinking a 4 or 5 core radiator, maybe triple flow should fix it and maybe an electric fan to supplement the engine one. He was thinking about an intercooler but the only real option would be the bonnet version and it was really going to be too much mucking around to do it so he is now happy staying as it is - even if it doesn't have the power of my freelander or even the towing capacity.
Cheers

From memory the radiator guy couldnt fit a 4 core in due to space issues.Went for closer together fins to increase the capacity.
No room for thermofans, they run an engine oilcooler up front on the aircon.
Check to see if his has a radiator cowl, ours didnt,I got a navara or hilux one, they all run a similar size radiator.

couldnt figure out how to quote it:p
i know the one you're talking about its a yellow datsun 720 dualcab 4x4 chassis, races class 5, but is only rwd and it actually runs a 350chev and T400 which is mounted aft the firewall, the driver and navigator sit in the rear of the cab and it has a swing arm design rear suspension, under the bonnet is just fans radiator and custom ifs. Ive driven it:o :p It's my mates dads car who built, and races it. Ive alse been it when he was driving and **** it's fast.

Hi Andy,
bad luck on the Triton. We had one ex demo in 92 it was a lemon! Was good down South but the probs started as soon as we went North to the Pilbara they do not like heat at all. There are no Mitsubishi dealers between Geraldton and Darwin so no good for warranty stuff.
Every trip for 9 months of the year were at 80kph due to overheating. Tried all sorts of remedies. Finally solved it with a GQ Patrol repair!!
In the 3 years that we had it we went through 2 turbos, 2 clutches, 1 gearbox they are not good long distance tow vehicles.
