After agonising over what to buy I have bitten the bullet and gone with the BFG MT's 235 85 16.
Thats the tallest and widest I can go without flares and wider rims and we got 120000km's out of the AT's so im hoping for about 80 to 100 out of the MT's.
PLEASE give me good reports to support my decision as Im stretching the budget buying them so I hope I have meade the right decision.

Are they going on a Disco1 or 2?
Thats the size I want to go up to on my D2,Ive got a 2" lift and heaps of room.Currently got 255/70 but the 235/85 is much bigger.

I run BFG MT off road although mine are the older style ( without the extra lugs on the side. ) They have been good about 1/2 worn now and still seem to perform well, but I heard the newer model is a bit softer compound.
235/85 is the standard size on a Defender I believe
They are about a 32" tyre - MT's imn those will look good on a Disco and certainly get your diffs off the dirt. :D Can't see how you will get away without some cutting though if its a D1
Cheers

It is a D1 and yes as I put just before Im going to cut the guards as soon as they are fitted.
235 85 16 measures in around 31.75" and the 255 70 16 is about the 30 mark.
Try this tyre size calculator I find it fairly usefull.
http://www.csgnetwork.com/tireinfo4calc.html
As for the MT's what sort of KMs could I expect, spending about 50/50 On/Off road, like I said before I have got 120k out of tha AT/KO's so Im not hard on tyres and now Mrs McRover has her Carolla I wont have to use the Disco for as much family stuff anymore so it should see more dirt and mud.
I got a call before from the tyre joint and I have to wait a week for them so I have that much time to change my mind and go back to the AT's that I wasnt happy with at all in mud.

235/85/16 is a good size for a Disco, i just did the same on my D2, i had to modify the rear wheel carrier though to fit the larger tyre, which was pretty easy, 15min while we were camping at Chichester SF:D

I have 265/75/R16 on my D2 with no lift and no rubbing issues either, just the stock setup. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/04/234.jpg (javascript:;)

On our DI I have maxxis mudders 245/75/16, trimmed the rear corners as directed, took the springs out and checked that all was ok, test it on a trip still good, then bent the crap out of the quarters at cape york. Looks like it depends on how much flex and side angle you get.
Another guy I know has doen 100 000km on 235/85/16 on a D1 with out cutting anything and hasn't had a problem. He does have classic steel rims though and doesn't drive where I do.
the 245/75/16 puts the speedo spot on so the 235 will take it up a tad.
The Cooper 235/85/16 I have been told measure nearly 33' so not all tyres on the same lable are equal.
You know you will love them!

:lol2: try 55,000km ;)
although driving style and road (and off road) surfaces have a huge bearing on tyre life.
a tyre calculator will only give you an approximate size, as they do vary from brand to brand (and batch to batch)
IIRC, BFG claim they are a 32" tyre. Go to the BFG Oz site and it has a list of all their tyre specs in a PDF.

Sorry to disapoint but the boss has spoken (I should have asked her first) and Ive had to cancel and go back to AT's.
Im a little disapointed but everything she said back to me came from me in the first place and as much as I want the muddies I cant justify it at the moment (specially with people only getting 60,000kms out of them lol).
I have tossed up between MTR's (wear too quick), Coopers (had them on the Jeep and they were crap),General Grabber AT's (may as well just go with what I know and get the BFGs) and the Muddies and AT's.
I would like the stronger sidewalls of the Muddies or MTR's but I can live without them and just not go so hard off road and take the chicken tracks.
Well I might save a bit more and get a difflock or 2 next as planned for a while but thanks to those never ending bills It may take a while.

Try the Nangang Mudstar 235/85/16 for 160ea fitted, that may change her mind;)
That's what i've just put on mine and they are quieter than the Cooper STs i had.

Mate I have the 235/85s on my ser 1. I got hold of some Hankooks, $180 ea fitted so can't go wrong. I've notched up a few thousand km on them and they still look virtually brand new. I used to have BFG ATs fitted and specifically went to these because of their poor performance in the mud. On the other hand they do smoke up pretty well (refer avatar pic!).
I went the whole hog and did the flares but you can get away with losing about 2" back from the bottom rear edge of the guard and take that up about 7", tapering into the original line.
I was catching the guard going up some driveways a little quick before I had the flares put on so be careful of driving without the guards done.

another new style muddie that has good raps across various boards are the Maxxis MT762 Bighorn. Three ply sidewalls, 235/85/16 = 31.7" OD on a 6.5" rim, 15mm tread depth. Possibly fitting these next time around in 255/85/16 to replace the same size BFG's.

Thanks guys, she's made up her mind and I have to agree with her thinking, 120000km's is pretty good mileage so Im gonna give them another go.
I will be getting a set of play tyres later on when I have a spare grand and will look at everything again then.
Thanks for all your help.

Coopers (had them on the Jeep and they were crap),
Ive played with the discover st and stc versions of coopers and didnt mind them but I dont think they'd make their advertised 80k
General Grabber AT's
Ahhh yes, the super slipper...great on the road, tops on the sand at 15psi NO warning when the let go on the gravel other than the traction control light coming on to let you know that the ass end is trying to over take the front in case you hadnt worked out that you should now using the passanger side window as the glass of choice to pick your line through this corner and for mud work HAH youd almost be better off with a racing slick.

Thanks Dave I find it about the same with AT's on mine but a bit of sideways fun is ok as long as you have enough track.
As far as the Coopers go, I only had them off road once and the traction control in the Jeep was going nuts trying to get power to the ground in low range up what the landrover thinks is a speed hump, they were only 6 ply and they wore the edges of the tread no matter what pressure you put in them.
A shonky tyre joint told me the rear alighnment was out which is a bit hard with a Dana 44 live axel, I put it down to the LSD being as tight as the proverbial and the TC VC not disengaging when it was meant to.
When that same tyre joint did the alighnment and put 28mm toe in on the front. The 5 miniute drive to another tyre place was like driving a plow through rocks, it had a mind of it's own and I was only game to go about 40kmh.

Hey Aaron, i got them from Blairs Tyres at Peakhurst, they retail for $168ea fitted, but we asked, and well, they gave us a discount:D
If you go the 235/85 you'll have to turn the rear wheel carrier upside down to fit the larger tyre on it.
They are very quiet and seem OK so on road, i have been coming to work and the road has been damp from the dew and they seem to hold the road pretty good, on the gravel they are very good.

On the subject of tyres, I currently have some BFG tyres on the front of my Disco - I can't remember the exact type but they are a fairly meaty tread AT type.
However, on the back I have a pair of Wranglers with plenty of tread left.
I was planning on taking the Wranglers off and replacing them with some new BFGs to match the front.
I am guessing this is worth doing. Any comments?

:) G'day Diff
I'm running 245/75R/16 at the moment
had to take out quite a bit of the Gards becaue of the off roading that I normally do with the guys from Club , was fine with the original Alloys 16/7's but they're way too Soft , bent 2 Alloys on same trip and ended up with 2 flatties , I have since gone with kings Steel rims but without doing my home work properly , 2 inch OME springs , the king Steel Rims are distroying my car and in effect it's dotroying the Types , i have taken as much as I can off the rear guards , the Off set is too far out , I thing this is illegall , I have no flares eiter , I'll sent some picks if you like. 245/75R/16 is not a Good choice with the new Rims but I have no choice as they are a carry over from the early Alloy days.

Actually thats quite possable, all it takes is a suspension bush to be shot and your rear alignment can be out by up to 5mm, this will make the vehicle crab and feather the tyres out, ususally the trailing tyre more than the lead.
When that same tyre joint did the alighnment and put 28mm toe in on the front. The 5 miniute drive to another tyre place was like driving a plow through rocks, it had a mind of it's own and I was only game to go about 40kmh.
Ummm, ok thats just stupid....... hope you billed them for new tierod ends, rubber, bearing check etc etc

Ones on the right for me and keep my BFG AT's for the highway.
Will need a 2' body lift, flares and offset rims to squeeze under the old girl.
