Alledgedly the "UK's very first test drive of 2007 Land Rover Defender" .
I hope the CDL was not engaged.

Look at 32 seconds, CDL is engaged. Does it have TC? It seemed to move far better when the driver gave it the boot... Training would be wise.

I agree with you. I'm not sure it's all down to the driver. After watching this a dozen times, I can't believe how pathetic the Defender is at an apparently easy task. With the steel wheels it will be a base model without TC. The suspension seems very stiff with limited travel.

There is a second clip which shows the driver is not that timid.

In the first video, look at round;

11 - 17 seconds, you can hear what sounds like a wheel slipping.
16 - 17 seconds you can see that both left hand wheels aren't slipping (so the guess is the front right hand wheel is doing the slipping).
28 seconds, you can hear a definite clunk which sounds like the CDL being engaged, after that you then see the back left hand wheel has wheel spin.

I doubt the CDL was engaged and the wheel travel looks a dam sight better than a D3.

Best regards

Am I missing something here? The second video, the one where it goes off the tilting platform into a knee high puddle at about the same pace as a pensioners electric cart?

Come on WWW give us some serious off road pics of the new Defender and less of these idiots driving them, at least this one didn't roll it over.
We need the Camel Trophy back, dam the tree huggers (and the anti-smoking hippies too for that matter).

Best regards

Why don't they make a LandRover with a LSD or lock on the rear diff?
The first video has the rover moving slowly and becoming crossed axled. My first trucks were Jap off roaders and all had at least a LSD. It took me a while to understand that was the weakness of the LandRover.
Wheel travel is good in a Land Rover compared to what I drove and is great for off-roading but why not have a locker in the rear?

If you ask me he just drives like a grandad,(AULRO grandads exempt of course).
With the tilt bridge there I think it may have been a driver training day.
Three tries at that little bump in the road? he should have either gone CDL and/or low range OR gone for a bit of momentum.
Either he just doesn't know what he's doing and shouldn't be allowed to own a Landy OR he's doing the right thing and getting some training.

But the question is can Driftke70's mate slip it down the hill and roll it as well as he did his other one?

Dude! First praising the tojo 70 and now bagging the Fender!

Are you sure you're not a troll??

Looked to me that maybe they were trying to demonstrate wheel travel.

Well, the camera angle doe's a bloody good job at hiding the hump the right hand side wheels are having to go over, large enough to lift the left front wheel 8" off the ground, and the wheels are still driving, so the CDL is engaged. as the right rear wheel tries to climb the hump the front left has to climb another. no wonder it gets cross axled! also remember its new and unloaded, so the suspension will be stiff, and lastly, the sound is out of sync with the video by about 3-5 seconds.

Either way that person should NEVER NEVER NEVER be allowed to grace the seat of a Land Rover Defender or any Land Rover for that matter ever again Dismal effort that my ten year old nephew drives better than that:angel:

I reckon you guys are being just a little harsh.

First up, if I'd just spent $xxx I think I might take it just a slowly, y'know, try not to destroy it on the first ride.

Looks a lot to me like he took it slow, CDL in and high range, then hit low range first after making a mess of it and spun the tyres.

Looks to me like a fair bit of cross up too, looks easy from the side angle, but from the drivers seat of the new pride and joy, well I'd be driving careful too.;)

Cheers

If they were, wheel travel is supposed to keep the wheels on the ground. I don't think LR will be using clip this for publicity purposes.

I don't have rose tinted specs and leave no stone unturned. For my usage I've ruled out the 70 and any new Ford Rover is not far behind.

That is ridiculious. I would be one of the most inexperienced off roaders on AULRO even I would do better than that. As said above the driver does not do the car justice.

Well, I think it's impossible to make an accurate judgement based on a grainy video. It's two dimensional rather than three, thus making it very difficult to accurately assess the actual ground.

Furthermore, any comments as to driver experience are complete conjecture. Maybe the driver is experienced, maybe not. Again, it's impossible to make the call.

You have other factors to consider: Who took the video, who published it, why, background, etc.

I hardly think a youtube video is going to be a significant selling point in a motor vehicle.

Anyone who makes any real judgemnet based on this or any such recording probably will never drive such a car off road anyway!

I dont think its that bad, the wheel travel in the rear isnt to bad for a standard vehicle, and the number one rule of cross axle stuff is to use momentum the driver didnt in this case.

Anyway, maybe he spilt his coffee? Or he might have been eating an inferior standard meat pie at the time and therefore wasn't concentrating on driving.
