white oil the in gearbox ?

Hi All
I am in the process of removing a donor gearbox fom a RRC
I have drained the oil.
I know that white sludgy oil means the gearbox has had water in it.
So ...... Two Questions:

I think your going to say it depends how long it's been in there but if I refill it with clean oil and drain it again to flush it out do you think the gear box will be OK:confused:

The only way I can think of water getting in the gear box is wading without the plug in it? Any other ways you can think of that I should check:confused:

the box is a manual I just got the donor RRC so I don't know how long it's been like that. The bloke I got it from said it had been in use until about two months ago.

I guess I'll swap it anyway and give it a good flush through. I suppose it wil be worth the chance give the price/trouble of getting another box. Re-con box hmmm it would cost more than my RRC is worth !

If it is a manual, as long as you flush it properly, and change, 'O' rings, seals etc., you should be okay..........

as long as not too much damage has been done prior,,,,,,,,,,,

I would use a spirit based flush before you change seals..........

and make sure the waste flush is as clean as it's original state...

shouldn't really do this but if you go to repco/ingrams/oex if you have one near you ..... get some ERG UFA - universal flushing agent.

Fill it with auto trans fluid ant take it for a run till hot,drain and re-fill with the correct oil,go for a very good quality oil,even synthetic.
There will be rust on the bearings,ATF is very good at treating rust,just hope it aint too serious!!!!

i might be right off track here but i once bought some nulon oil treatment for keeping gearbox diffs quiet and was a milky white color and when draining the oil had the same milky appearence.

Thats why i asked how long it had been since it ran, as LA said there will now be surface rust on things, especially the bearings, now its been sitting for a couple of months.

I would do as LA says, then put the right oil in, run it for a few thousand KM's and then do another change just to be sure. Matt

Well you live and learn next time I'll check the oils !
I have already bought new seals and other bits n pieces I had the intention of replacing them anyway.
I just need to put the hoist together and get the box out, now.

Just one thing hangover, when you join the transfer case and the gearbox take specail care not to damage the seal between the two, if you do it will leak as soon as you get it going again, thats what happened to mine. All that time to get it out and the bastard still leaks. :twisted:

I want other stuff off the donor, like dash board, extractors, etc
I have been taking them off as I go.
Those dashboards are a right $h1t to get out, but anyhow I have it mostly ready for removal I just want to remove the actual extractors, (have exhaust off) and put my hoist together.
I bought a new hoist for $200 as apposed to $45 a day hire!
So once the hoist is put together I can undo the mounts and lift it out.

I have a few days off next week so I hope to at least get the both boxes out and replace the seals n stuff on the new-ish box.

Whoooo I have EVENTUALLY got my replacement LT95 in the RR. Only took me about...........well way too long.

Friday my FIL and I got the box back in with much pushing n shoving.
Then yesterday I couldn't remember if I torx'd the pressure plate before we put the box back in so I pulled it back out again!!!!! guess what, yes they were tight. :mad:
but on the plus side I noticed one of the split washers on one of the bolts had spread open and needed replacing.
Anyhow yesterday after the box was back in I turned the key but it wouldn't start. I checked the HT leads, battery, even used Start u bastard. It wouldn't start.

Then I noticed I had disconnected the fuel pump when pulling out the dashboard ooops.
Fired up straight away not bad considering it hasn't been started in months.

hmmm long post either way I'm pretty pleased now. I just need to put the rest back together and and and and and and ........

As others said, very likely to have rust on gear teeth and bearings. Hope it is ok.

If you pull the covers off (simple), you can get a good look at the condition of the gears - large cover on top, smaller cover on left side and larger sloping cover on underside of t/case, also circular pto cover.

Also they have an oil strainer that you should remove and clean out before and after flushing. Be careful that you line the strainer up properly (inner and outer seats) - otherwise it will be crushed (plastic).

If you still have some of the oil you could check if it is water in it by heating some which will boil off any water. You would then know if you had a problem.
