TD5 Fuel Tank Leak

Gday Guys. My fender starting weeping fuel a few weeks back. Dropped the tank last weekend & cleaned it right up. I didn't disconnect the fuel lines as I was really looking for a punture/split or the like but found nothing & the tank stayed dry when filled. It appears to be coming from around the fuel line cluster were they enter the tank, and only after the LR runs eg. has pressure in the lines / connections. Had the beast in for the regular service (135k) last week but got scared when the tech said it would be a "big labour job". Only took me 2 hours all up and I've never been down those woods before. I let it ride & figured I'd have a crack at sussing it out myself.

Anyone had a similar issue or mucked around with the connections / top seals before?

I may be well off the mark here, but I am sure there was a thread about this a while back.

I am guessing at the moment but it was something to do with the hoses fouling either each other or another component.

Do a search on fuel leaks you may find something.

I've dropped mine out (130 TD5) to check out a noisy pump and discovered how wonderfully complicated you can make a fuel pump assembly.

If it's only leaking when running it's probably the plastic clip on fittings at the end of the lines (like bayonet fittings). I can't remember exactly, but I think I remember someone posting about O rings on these fittings, so maybe they have perished. If you pull one of the 4 clips out and take a look, is there an O ring in there?

Thanks Spudboy. Have had a look at the manuals on the web but ultimately will need to pull it apart. The fittings did look to be a bayonet type setup. The actual "cap" that the hoses go into on top of the tank is another aspect but one step at a time.

You need to have a good seal between the tank and the pump top assembly too. Mine weeps a bit when it is very full of diesel, but not when less than 3/4 full. It must build up pressure (hot fuel?) and push it out the seal when it is over a certain level.

There has been chat on this.
Was it Frenchies Defender that had the problem? and was a hose or return hose.
From memory the tip was to cut an inspection panel into the floor panel whilst you have the tank out so you can get to it easy next time.
Try sending a PM to Frenchie asking if it was his Defender,pretty sure it was.

My be of help but I had fuel leaking from my TD5 Disco a few months ago, which turned out to be the rubber seal on the pump assembly unit which had got pinched at some stage when someone had it last out. No idea where your's would be but in the Disco, it is under the rear carpet and from memory it was a relatively simple fix of a new rubber seal correctly positioned and screwed down onto pump assembly..........my mechanic did it though so by me saying relatively easy means, it looked easy:angel: :D

Yes I had a leak which was from one of the bayonet fitting not being quite in place. Of course with my long range tank it is a very difficult job to get at ........


......without an angle grinder. :twisted:

I now have a nice inspection hatch in my rear floor.
