View Full Version : Wierd TD5 Power Problem that went away

Just returned from a 10,000 klm trip from Karratha to Melbourne and back. Going accross the Nullabour the Disco TD5 developed a problem when flooring the pedal to overtake. It would loose all power after starting to ramp up, then go again then do the same until you backed off a bit.
I had Landrover look at it but they could not pin point the problem. I pushed on to Melbourne and the problem disapeared and has not come back since.
Any ideas, has anyone had this strange problem before?

Hi Brad
Have you checked your ECU to see if its bleeding?????
Easy to do,remove battery cover and lift the ECU out.If there is oil leaking out of the orange multi-plug you have oil in the harness. It causes all sorts of strange events, the oil changes impulse values which confuses the computer.
Other than that, the boost sensor could be playing up.I was given one of these last week, going to put it on to see if my lag problem changes.
If no oil is present, get the computer scaned for registered faults,it should have saved the fault.Should cost between$100 and $150 to get it done by the dealer.

There are a number of things to check:
1. Oil in injector harness
2. De-lamination of the rubber air pipes between turbo and intercooler.
3. Partially blocked fuel filter (Significant if you have got fuel in remote areas, which may have been dirty)
4. In-tank fuel pump may be on the way out.
5. Sticky waste-gate valve.
6. Less likely would be the throttle potentiometer, but this should show up as a warning light, and fault code in the ECU
Cheers,
Lionel

Hi LandyAndy,
Thanks for the quick response. Landrover susposidly checked the ECU for oil, swapped out the boost sensor and checked some other things and could not come up with an answer.
I was wondering if I could have got a bad batch of fuel maybe as it is as happy as larry after towing a 2.5 tonne van back?

Sounds like fuel starvation, how long since fuel filter change?
Cheers

I would possibly go with a sticking wastegate, as this causes a 'surging miss' as the MAP sensor tells the ECU to cut fuel momentarily due to overboost. This may have rectified itself after a time, and was possibly carbonned up? I have a customer who doesen't drive his Td5 hard enough, and consequently there is one long hill I can get it to do this on when I drive it. It does it maybe twice then is OK. Until next service....

maybe it just doesnt like crossing the border........?
to me that sounds like a symptom of overboosting........im with jc on this one......
can the waste gate be cleaned out with some carby cleaner to rectify the problem.......?

Could it just have been a bad batch of fuel ?

wouldnt bad fuel be felt through the whole rev range.......?
this was only being felt when trying to overtake......full load and full throttle......
there may have been a fault in the ecu which was reset after the engine was switched off......and before the return trip......
maybe......?

Is it possible they have fixed it? Has it happened again since?

Hi,
Landrover also felt it may be something to do with the boost. The played with it but when I took it out and flooored it from 60 klm it did it again. A smoother acceleration would not cause it.
They played with the arm on the waste gate and also changed the turbo modulator unit but when I took it out and floored it from 60 klms it did it again.
They had also plugged in the laptop at first and no fault codes were logged. I did not drive it for 2 days and when I did the fault had gone. The Landrover dealer who looked at it did not charge me as they could not pick the problem in the half day they had it. Also they squeezed it in above all their other work as I was on holiday with it. Would reccomend them to anyone.
I am worried it may come back at the worst time. When over taking some one on the road with the van on the back. I will clean the waste gate hardware with the carby cleaner and see from there. Also it goes in for it's 80,000 service where they should change the fuel filter among other things (I hope). Any other hints/tips tricks greatly appreciated.

Check the intercooler hoses, they may be sucking flat when you floor it causing it to loose power suddenly.

Yep, thats another classic D2 fault. The s shaped one at the inlet to the intercooler is usually the culprit.
