Silly question, but here it goes. Both my rear window winders are postioned to slightly open the rear windows when going over corrigations. The weight of the handels slowly lower the window, until they are open about 10mm. On investigation to rotate them, I can't figure out how to remove them without damaging them. How do you get them off?
Thanks,
Ken

I doubt if it's the weight of the handle that is making it unwind, however...............
There is a small cap in the centre of the winder handle, there should be a small cut-out/indent or just a shallow lip.
Carefully prise this off with a thin sharp object, and inside you will find a 6mm or 8mm bolt - just undo that.

If they are the same as a 98 Defender you do not have a centre cap. You push the door trim back and with a forked tool, or two knife blades push the circlip back and the handle then drops off, rotate it a couple of splines then push the circlip back on. A bit fiddly but I did it with only a couple of misses, dropping the clip in the mud, maybe put a sheet under.

Thanks Ladas,
No center cap. Just a 1 piece plastic handle, with a winding knob on the end. :(

Thanks, Jeff
I was wondering if it is held on by a circclip. Thanks.

Sorry, I was working off the attached. However if that is the case, then as Jeff said there should be a circlip - you will find though that you have to have about four hands, one to pull the handle towards you, two to push the door panel back, quite hard - to expose the clip, and another to try and hook the little bugger out.

Have the same problem on my '96 Defender. Circlips, but don't bother. I thought exactly the same thing; it didn't stop the windows from winding themselves down.

its the weight of the glass that makes them drop.......its a defender......
an easier way to remove those clips is with a rag..........just slide it under the handle......
and pull the rag through......this will catch on the ends of the clip and remove it........
and you only need two hands........
which means.....if you have a mate helping.......between the two of you......you can hold two beers........
and when you get good at it......you can hold an extra beer in the same hand as the rag.........just let the window winder handle drop to the floor.......

What a beauty, don't learn a new way to drink beer every day.
Is there a trick for getting them back on too?
:D

you need to refit them before you have too many beers.......
just refit the clip back onto the handle......and push the handle home.......

Ken,
Handels rotation doesn't help, agree with Tony, it is the weight of the glass. I've done it and rear windows still go down.

Ruslan
