The main muffler needs replacing. I assume some of you guys have replaced yours with a non LR part to save a few bucks ( I'm not over cash strapped at the moment). Before I go to an exhaust shop, I just want some ideas.
V8 Disco by the way

For what?? Diesel or petrol??
Most muffler shops should be able to get you one at a decent price. Lukey are always good for V8s. Even a diesel get one that free flows a bit better.

On my 300 tdi i replaced the main muffler with a hotdog
no more noise than the standard muffler and the turbo spools up quicker
the best $80 ive spent in ages

I thought the Turbo was the muffler, must get that hot dog one day:D

Just got back from Ferndale Exhaust in Scoresby. Vic as recommended by Hiline some time back.
They ordered one in whilst I waited and did it there and then. took all of 20 mins and I was back on the road.
I'm happy.

I pulled out that massive baffled muffler and stuck a free flowing Turbo something (i think it was a Lukey for memory). It has completely transformed Thor, better fuel economy, better acceleration, quieter on the freeway, sounds like a V8 and even the gear changes feel smoother for some reason. Best $200 I have spent on the thing.

I've removed mine altogether and replaced the pipe to the same diameter all the way through. I put a 200mm Dia straight thru resonator on the end and its no noisier than std but 10kg lighter :D .

JC recommended it and it works a treat.:p

yeh when i put the turbo lukey muffler in place of the box i left the standard muffler at the back. seems to have been a good result.

I just got a piece of 1 1/2 inch exhaust bent up to fit exactly where the genuine muffler was (so I could put the original one back on if it was too loud). Kept the genuine little end muffler/resonator. Absolutely minimal difference in the sound (I was disappointed - expected more of a rumble) apart from a more distinct turbo whistle. Can't tell the difference from inside the cabin at all.

Picks up better from low revs. No difference higher up in the revs.

So .............what's a resinator are you talking about one of the silencer/baffle boxes?

So does your exhaust go straight through? no baffles, just pipe?

yep, slightly noisier on the inside when accelerating, much noisey on the outside

Resinators are like small mufflers, usuall 200 - 300 mm long and about 150 -170 mm in Diameter. Their purpose is to remove any high frewuency sounds/vibrations from an exhaust. They are usually straight thru at the same dimension of the pipe and have either perforated or raised perforated inners. I used the perforated inner type so as not to reduce the inside diameter.

similar to this but not as flash. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-25-Stainless-Steel-High-Flow-Exhaust-Resonator_W0QQitemZ4642079702QQihZ002QQcategoryZ72 478QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

There is no noticable difference from either inside or outside.

Cheers,

Did you find it added any power or is it about the same?

No power increase but the boost comes on quicker and at a couple of hundred RPM lower.

Cheers
