The last couple of times I filled the fuel tank on my 1999 V8 discovery I noticed a strong smell of petrol which went away soon after. I have now found what appears to be a leak on the top of the tank as fuel seeps down the left hand side of the tank near the wheel well when it is full but stops after 100k's or so. Can anyone tell me if it is posible and how to expose the top of the tank through the luggage space. Thanks.

Maybe if you remove the fuel pump access hatch & have a good look around there? Could possibly be coming from the in tank pump sealing ring.

D1 or D2? D1 tanks can crack around the breather outlet, leak until the fuel level drops below the crack. You won't be able to expose the top of the tank to check properly unless you drop it out - is a very easy job (it must be easy - I did it solo:D ) The only exposure through the luggage space is to get to fuel pump and pipes - worth a look, again very easy to do (and you will need to to drop the tank down)

my D1 has had this for a while now(years:angel:) but as it only occurs when the tank is full---;)
was told by a reliable source it could be the carbon-canister(?) leaking.

Mine is a D2 anyway thanks for the replies, I'll have a go at looking through the fuel pump hatch and if no good try dropping the tank if it's that easy.

Sounds like it could be the vent seals....only way to cure that is to drop the tank and investigate it further.
The Discovery I 300series had a recall against all tanks fitted betwen 96-96 for free replacemnet tanks. 40,000 units I heard.
I dropped my tank and repaired it using supersoft black silicone sealant...it lasted for 6 more years.
Then I heard about the recall and got me a brand new one with the new design which has a lesser ammount of breathers than the previous one.
I haven't heard about any similar problems with the DII...but it might be worth you checking the LandRover recalls listing, you might be up for a freebie replacement tank....Rover don't always publisize recalls outside of warranty but they do exist.
