View Full Version : Its all becoming Clearer - CDL not disengaging - Def 110

Ok .. previously I thought it was my CVs giving up the ghost .. but with a few more swearing it seems my CDL is not disengaging ...
Previous thread is here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=37106)
I did the jack up and rotate wheel out of gear, hand break off, CDL off ... and it was locked ...
I wiggled the CDL stick and it unlocked and is all good ... went for a drive, came back and it was still unlocked .... Hmmm
SO i went for a drive on my local 4wd test track (ie dirt road) and I locked it in CDL Low (light came on) and then High (Light on), went along, got back to the tar, and took it out of CDL (Light went off) ... drove home (400m) and jacked it up again ... and was still locked.. BUT the light was still off..
I know there is an adjustment bolt, will this help me ?
I have the RAVE CD but I am on a MAC and it does not work for me, so if anyone has the section in standard JPG / PDFs I would be most grateful if I could get that section / screen grab.
So please forum ... I am going Nutz and its driving me off my beer!

Mine did that recently after a drive in some sand. I put it back in H4 with diff lock disengaged however the light was flickering very gently. Got it to disengage by doing a hard turn in some loose gravel.
I think they get sticky due to lack of use. I hadn't been off-road for a while. Don't know what you can do about it.

Thanks for the PDF ..
Do you guys think I am on the right track that this may be loose ... causing the issue ?

In my view it would have to be pretty slack to cause this..
I would have thought that a more likely cause was a faulty/weak spring that goes on the selector rod inside the TC.
....................but I guess the adjustment would be the first (and easiest) place to look.

It's odd that its engaged with the light off. That bit eludes me.
Did you try reversing for a bit? That can take the strain out.
And when jacking, did you lift a front & rear wheel? It won't come out if under tension.
Take the centre cubby out, & have a sqiz from the top. I know mt t/c was perfect on the bench, but wouldn't engage properly onve re-installed. Linkage was fouling the bodywork sometimes.

I have just had a look at the TC front housing I have on the bench
The switch is only activated off of a very small 'knuckle' on the selector - so when the selector moves just a fraction the light would go off, however the full movement of the selector fork is required to move the dog clutch off of the splines.........
Which is why I thought it may be the spring ................
...............but as said above a little reverse after disengaging, may do the trick.

Yeah my light was flickering, but only very faintly. At first I though the light switch may be the problem but when I tried to go around a corner on bitumen I knew the CDL was still engaged.

I am really getting annoyed by it ... it seems to come and go
just went up the road (1km) first half the drive it was fine, then it wasnt .. cdl lock up and I could not turn without the bangs ..
its parked now.. not going anywhere til I work it out ... why does this always happen when your moving and unable to do squat.
I got a mech coming on wednesday evening, so unless i fix it before hand its up to him ...
Anyone local to Sutherland know anything about it, would happily put on some beer for some 1 on 1 with me and the beast.

ok we resolved the issue last night ...
There is a adjustment screw on the pivot for the CLD .... there is a retaining / lock bolt holding this arm in place ...
This sucker must have undone on my last trip on the corrugations ... and it made it so the CDL could not unlock.
Was fun .. 2 hours of work to find one bolt loose.... but its better than all the other options!!
Guess LR ran out of Loctite again :(
A huge thank you all on here for your help / suggestions and support !!!!!!

Great it was an easy (well relatively) fix, but I bet the stress levels were quite high at some stage.

Yeah ... at the moment, I am moving house, 4wd died, parents are sick, grand parents are sick ... not the time to flake out! .... I was close yesterday.
BUT the landy gods looked down on me and let me of this one ..
Also when testing it just then, I was impressed with the antistall ... whoa!
So again thanks to you all for input, and troy my trusty spanner wench!!

Good to hear its all fixed mate. Im having a similar problem with my rangie. I drive around for a while and then i get a short burst of gear grind from the transfer. Its only happened twice and i haven't driven anywhere since. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this

I doubt its the same thing, as it happens, its even in or out ... seems i have been driving mine in CDL for a few weeks    but no noticeable damage.
Does it happen when turning sharp ? if I turned in a big ark it wouldn't be noticeable .. but when I do a sharp turn it does it real quick (like pulling into a carpark)

No it was after i had driven about 2 to 3 km's and then as it shifted into 3rd its sort of stopped driving for a second and just ground gears and then continued driving. It did a similar thing when i put the nissan diffs in at first as the wrecker had supplied 2 different ratios for the diffs front to rear. but after it did it the first time this time I spent the weekend pulling the diff centres and counting the teeth and they are identical so im stumped. althogh after i put everything back together it didnt do it for about maybe 40 km's.
