View Full Version : What Oil are people using in LT95

Spoke to Mal Story today and he suggests that I use Castrol VMX 80 in an LT95.
I know that Rover recommend 20-50w engine oil but over the years there has been much discussion about the inadequacies of Motor Oil in high loads in a Gearbox environment.
I guess I am just trying to make an LT95 that was recently reconditioned at great expense last as well as it can.
Any suggestions appreciated

Yep 20w50 engine oil is all i used when i had a 4 speed rangie
so the cost of engine oil is cheap why not change it at regular intervals

Yea true I was considering changing it every 5000 ks

VMX80 is a very light gear oil - its used to improve cold shift performance in 'conventional' gearboxes. I suspect it is actually a bit lower in viscosity than 20/50 engine oil (engine and gear oils use a different viscosity rating system).
LandRover may have oriinally specified 20/50 engine oil due to no lightweight gear oils being available in the 70's/80's?
Then there are synthetic engine oils - I have been meaning to try some in my LT95, however most are lighter than 20/50

being the sad bugger I am I just looked at the LR manual for the LT95 is says either: 15w/50, 15w/40, 85w/90, 80w/90 for UK temperatures.
For warmer temps ie -10 to 30+ recommended is : 80wEP, (what ever EP is?).

Wasting your time and money doing that often.
40,000km is what's recommended.

Use the best engine oil u can get and add 1 to 1.5 litres of Moreys engine oil stabilzer both in the gearbox and the transfer case. Did this after rebuild at 230k still going untouched after 525k and very very quiet and smooth.

So what oil should I use in my Disco 2 V8 Manual gear box ?
And the transfer case ?

hi brad,
what brand & viscosity do you use?
Do you use all the same in the engine, TC and box?

80wEP, (what ever EP is?).
EP = Extreme Pressure ........as in, say, 75W/90 EP = 75 rating at freezing point/0 degrees Celsius or "Winter" and a 90 rating at 100 degrees (Summer/hot) and is rated as being suitable to be used in "extreme pressure" situations such as gear upon gear point to point pressure as in meshing gears in gear boxes, diffs etc

EP rating is not required in gearboxes but is needed where there is a large amount of sliding action as in most crown wheel and pinions (which is why the original recommendation for engine oil is OK, and which is what it was designed for). Well designed gearboxes avoid extreme pressure situations. The transfer case in particular is not very fussy, but the ease of gearchanging in the main gearbox is greatly affected by the type of oil. I have ended up using synthetic engine oil to get around a problem getting out of first in cold weather startups. The critical factor is to avoid too heavy an oil as the oil pump willfail if asked to pump it cold.
If running a lot more power than it was designed for, lubrication will become more critical.

Well i use penrite hpr 50 in the engin and have been thinking of useing it in the lt 95 but would it be too heavy for the box being a 40 w /70 grade oil ????
Cheers

Mobil 1 - I think! its a while since I put it in. It did have the desired effect I should add. No subsequent problems getting out of first.

From what I have heard even HPR30 is too heavy for an LT95 I read that on here somewhere.

Gee what did I use.... in the past I had used castrol GTX and I have used penrite 20w50.. it was a long time ago so I cant remember which. But its the Moreys that does all the helping and smoothing and quietning and yes I used it in the gearbox t/c and the engine!
I use a litre of Moreys every third oil change in the engine but change the oil filter and my toilet roll oil filter as well. Due me on LPG the engine oil lasts a lot longer and I have on occasion let the changes go to 15k as the oil is still very clean on the dipstick.
I also use moreys in the power steering pump and now in my viscous transfer chain driven T/C.
I use 100% moreys in the front swivel assy and of course all the diffs.
Brilliant stuff, was made for landrovers...lol
But that is just my opinion which I have aquired after owning Range Rovers now since 1984 and using the stuff.
