This may not be in the right spot but any tech heads out there can offer help with a project idea?
Had a prowler and now want to rig up a silent alarm (prefer to catch the culprit in the act). Thinking along the lines of motion sensors rigged to a light in the house, BUT would prefer a 12v setup due to legalities of playing with 240V.

Aside from a big black bitting dog, you should be able to rig up a 240v setup with a plug in sensor, they come attached to the twin , outdoor lamp sets, , not knowing whats around you , if you have a bunnings warehouse nearby, go and have a look at what they have, most of there stuff is DIY
if you can;t find up that is easy to set up, try a hardwired one that is connect via an extension cord/ easy to do,

I am sure it would be easy enough to just get a alarm system from some one like dick smith or jaycar ..............and if you don't want the siren/bell, just remove it and replace it with some low voltage light.

I was recently shown a nice wireless one ie no wires needed between the sensors/sirens and the main control box.

With the right phone card I am told it will even send a text message to your mobile..

I can't remember what brand though a mate's son is distributing them.

But yes tricky Dicky or jaycar have a few options for DIY

Mr Zook, I take it the culprit, skulks around in the dark around your house,
a friends biting dog maybe?
seriously though, as I said earlier, you can easily adapt outside floods to sensor, i know because my parents have them everywhere after some low life tried to break in when we were overseas.

good luck

Measure twice cut once, in my case, read twice then reply, I'm a goose.

reverse engineer some movement detectors so they light up inside and not outside to warn you, perhaps you can adapt the outside sensor light ones, I don't think they are PIR like the indoor ones.
But someone will know!

ATM a dog's out as it's not fully fenced. A Dobie for the new house is being considered as I have a couple friends are ex RAAF doggies:twisted: .

Putting a couple of motion sensor spotlights up tommorow but would prefer to be alerted to somone's presence without them knowing that I know, you know. Will stroll around Dick's sometime and see what sort of gadgets I can piece together. CCTV is on the cards too.

Here is another suggestion
I had a look at bunnings yesterday and they have single sensors that aren't connected to a light, all you need to do is wire them up so when they detect a small light turns on in the house,
another suggestion , if you can do it and the yard/area of concern is dark, string a bit of fishing line to a can so it rattles, a trip wire?

Put up a sign that states a Big Black Panther roams this yard seems to work for some of the people on here:wasntme:
