Clutch Defender

Hi all,

Suddenly this morning I have to put the clutch pedal a lot further in then usual. Shifting gears is still possible but just.

Is this a fault in the Slave Cylinder? I have a spare one with me so I can change this.

Please advise

Could be in the master or slave, any sign of leaks anywhere

Or could be the adjustment at the pedal.

Bad fluid, or air in fluid.

Could be master, slave or clutch fork. Most likely either master or slave - look for fluid leaks (slave from bell housing drain and master down pedal) If bleeding fixes it, or if fluid is low, it is hydraulics. The master cylinder can be faulty without leaking, and if it has only just started leaking it may not show yet.

Most likely to be the master cylinder (aluminium bore), the cast iron bore slave cylinder rarely gives trouble.

topping up with liquid en bleeding did the job. We will see how long it lasts....

Hi all,

after bleeding clutch, it seemed all fine. 2 days later clutch fluid was again low and therfore must be a leak. I replaced Master cylinder with the new spare I carried. After installing it, big leaks occured from bell housing drain, therefore must be the slave cylinder (??) Probably the new master cylinder buggered up the slave cylinder completely.

Can somebody confirm this and if this is the case, any idea how I can get a replacement slave cylinder to Exmouth?? It's Friday afternoon...:(
Would love some telephone numbers of companies/people who keep Defender Spare parts in WA.
Don't really want to drive to Perth without a clutch (although possible...)

My RRC's slave cylinder uses a Sigma wheel cylinder rubber. But I have no idea if the RR's slave cylinder is the same as yours.

if big red is any indication...

you will do a clutch master cylinder at on average 30k km...

after you fix the second master cylinder fault you will blow out the slave cylinder.

carry brake fluid with you (dot4) and you can limp it home, you dont need to bleed it you can just fill it providing you dont keep pumping the pedal after you first notice the clutch is playing up. it wont be perfect but its better than nothing and trying to bleed the clutch by yourself on the side of the road.
