Having seen JDs post about age, I thought this may be a bit of fun.
So, age when got a drivers licence, and your early fun 'n' games...
but if you got a car at, say, ten years, start up the story....

Me: 'P' car Licence on my 17th birthday

1974: Fiat 124 sedan 1968 (used) - 1 year
1975: Mazda F1000 1975 (new) - 1 year
1976: Holden HQ Van 1972 (used) - 6 months
1976: Ford Escort RS 1976 (new) - 6 months
1977: Fairlane ZC 1970 (used) - 2 years

etc etc etc

now I'll go and find some pics.........

have fun!!!

my first car was a morris minor, cost me 168 pound

i was only a baby and still at school, used to mow a football field with a victa mower to save up the money for it :P

stripped and rebuilt it and then destroyed it between two mango trees in the old mans yard a few years later...

got my license at 18, thought i better formalise it :p

then a vauxhall viva i fitted a 6 cyl austin freeway ex police pursuit motor ... transverse front spring pin was forever breaking ....

other vehicles of note include..

xp falcon sedan.... beautiful vehicle, used it as the wedding car when i got married...

datsun cherry 100a ... first of the front wheel drive datsuns.... used to rally it.. took off where the cooper s left off was the advertising and it pretty well described it...

really really nice HG premier wagon in walnut metallic bronze, beautiful chromed mags, magic car, got hit by a runaway racehorse at doomben, nearly written off, rebuilt and just had it nice and had to sell to to pay for a funeral....

datsun 1600 sedan.. mild cam, twin 45mm webers, it flew like the wind.. 3rd gear it would have revved itself to death....

about 8-10 fc and fe holdens, love em :P

nissan g60... great 4wd that i was forever recovering yotas in...

xd falcon van, 302 slightly worked with tricked up auto.... brisbane to glastone in 5 hours twice a week for 6 months with a 1/2hr stopover in gin gin.. used to cost $40 a trip, hate to think how much now...

7+ land rovers (3 still in my posession) and still going

i will get a brain one day.....

Got my licence in 1987, age 16 in Canada
First car bought was a 1974 Plymouth Sattelite Sebring Plus with a 400 high performance engine ( needed work then, never regoed - still on dads farm - looking at getting it restored)
1st car that I regoed was a 1968 Dodge dart, 4 dr, 318. Two tone - white and rust, bought at an auction for $127.50 including GST. Had to perform some surgery on the front A-arms to get it driveable. Again still on the farm. I miss that car. Drove it 1/2 way around Canada, only problem I had with it was with starter motors, a leaking water pump and a problem with the choke. Good thing about this car was most of my friends were too embarrased to be seen in it so we always took their cars - one way to save on petrol.

License 1988 age 17

Learned on a Datsun 1200 owned by my parents - see below!

1) Holden Gemini 1977 (1989). Dad bought it while I was at Uni. "Does it matter what colour it is?" he asked me. "Just so long as it isn't that foul greenish cream." So guess what it was? Sold it to my sister when I needed cash - was written off in a freeway pileup.
2) Datsun 1200 1971 (1991). Bought from my parents. Had a 1200cc Sunny Jap import motor - went very well. Broke two engine mounts (dodgy setup from the replacement) while I had it, ended up a mix of brown (original) and blue from my home panelbeating, including with the back of on axe. Sold to my brother, who sold it for it's body to a mechanic.
3) Toyota Corona 1985 (1994). Got married (mistake 1), bought Corona (mistake 2).
4) Suzuki Sierra 1992 (1995). This was my ex-wife's step-grandparent's dog's car. He had a car, she had a car, and the dog had a car. The dog was finally allowed in his car, so we bought the spare one. Went lots of places, never gave trouble, got sold when our daughter was on the way.
5) Subaru DL wagon 1991 (1998). As above, but rusted around the windscreen due to a dodgy sealant.

And slotting in between the cars - 4.1 Honda CB250 1971, 4.2 Kawasaki GPX250 1990

Started driving in the paddock (from about twelve) on a series of my father's former cars - Ford T, 1923 Reo, 1931 Swift, got my licence on an Austin 16 in early 1959.
Cars I have owned:-
1. 1960-62 - VW pickup
2. 1962-63 - Series 1 swb hardtop
3. 1963-66 - Series 2 " "
4. 1966-69 - Series 2a lwb traytop (carless while in PNG)
5. 1971 - Moke
6. 1971-79 - Citroen ID19 wagon
7. 1979- - Citroen DSpecial
8. 1989-92 - Ford Laser
9. 1990- Series 2a ex-army FFR, now ute.
10. 1992- 110 County

This does not include various company cars I have had through the years, nor Landrovers I have acquired for parts. Not very many for nearly fifty years of having a licence.

Remembering I grew up on a farm and started with paddock bombs.

10yo to drive to the front gate about 1.5km for school.

HD Holden 3 on the tree 161-every panel had rust and dents and no floor
HD Holden powerglide 186-no floor
HR Holden 3 on the floor Impala quick shifter and bucket seats 192 stroker-should have kept it as there was not much wrong with it.
VW Type 3 square back 1600 manual-nearly caught fire several times, fuel leaks and electrical faults dont mix.
VW beatles 2 off 1 1960 and 1 1965 both more trouble than what they were worth.
XP Falcon 1965 200 super pursuit 3 spd auto Ex cop-started restoring it, put on the back burner and then all windows broken by a kid that was visiting the farm, it is now living at garden world in springvale rd Keysborough as a garden ornament.
XP Falcon 1965 170 pursuit 3 on the tree-bought as fire damaged for $50 with 3 months reg, drove it from Dandenong to Merrijig on L's and then stripped the parts I wanted for the other one and cut the roof and used it for shooting roo's.
Landrover 2a shorty ute 186 red 6 fairy OD-inherited from my Dad, I put a lot of work into it and did a fair bit of driving in it on L's but soon after getting my P's a V8 cortina came along at the right price and I couldnt resist.
Honda Life 2cyl 360cc 4 door 1972, great car, used it mainly for driving to work and back as we lived 20km out of town and it cost me $10 per week to get to work, $4.50 to Melbourne when I was earning $112 per week-Sister gave it to me when she went to Japan and when she came back borrowed it and rolled it.
TD Cortina sedan, 302V8 engineered with single rail 4spd, good for 212kmh- drove into the ground and sold.
TC Cortina, 200 6cyl 3 on the floor Wagon-Drove all around the eastern states fruit picking and all the way to nth QL, Ended up being T boned because a dodgy mechanic that I took it to left a nut off the lower wishbone when replaced because of a broken lower shock mount. I got him to do it because I didnt have time and that nearly cost me and 2 mates our lives.
TD Cortina 250 X Flow wagon-Had for about 2 weeks, broken chassis RHR and single rail locked up and wasnt worth fixing.
120Y wagon A14-Used for courier driving, had several canaries on it until they took my plates and I had to get another car.
120Y coupe-Bought to race, ended up rego'd, cage, race seats the works, no interior other than seats and dash, balanced A14 pulsar motor twin dellorto's extractors, good for mid to high 14's at calder and 1:24 on the short track.
Had to remove the cage because of a change in road rules as it was bolt together alloy and then cracks started appearing in the floor so was parked for a while.
1200 coupe, bought to transfer drivetrain from 120Y but ended up swapping for Dato 1000 coupe which was mint.
RT72 coronas x 2 neither of which got on the road, sold them and the 1000 for an 84 Ford courier ute.
Ford courier ute-bought to move into our first house and to do renovations and work transport-had holes in fuel tank and engine was smokey and had lots of cancer, retired on the farm as fencing ute and still there.
Subi Brumby, inherited as a needs more work than it's worth car and I fixed it up as cheap transport as it was on gas-ran out of reg and Ex wife forgot to pay and had no chance of getting a roady so retired to the farm where it became spares for Mums.
VL Comode-POS is all I can say
MQ Pootrol-POS never have another
Mitsub Trito, 2.6 5spd on duel fuel duel cab-great car, no power but like a Landy, didnt need much in lowrange, needed 20 acre paddock to turn around but I loved it, comfy for a truck, AM only radio-Ex ended up with it and as we were buying it off my folks she gave it back and they sold it on to my sister before I got the chance to.
Sub Leoni-Good car but too small for the family but it was cheap after the breakup as I had no money.
80 series, 4l petrol 6 auto 2" lift on 33" AT's loved it but exy to run on petrol, had it for about 6 to 8 weeks before Mrs Mcrover t boned a 1 tonner on Hallam road when he pulled out of a side street.
The Disco, 97 300tdi auto and lots of add ons, been everywhere in it, love it

Mk I lotus cortina - the deal was my dad paid the insurance I paid for the car, so in 1972 I bought it, cost me GBP248.00 the insurance cost him GBP250.00 - he wasn't happy, but it was a deal :o

I spent more time under the bonnet trying to ballance the carbs than I did driving the bloody thing until I converted it to a webber DCOE.

I still have the car ................yep 35 years later, it's in storage in the UK

after that an assortment of decent cars and bangers ranging from renault 5's to Jag XJ's, and for a short time a nice, but expensive to run Rolls R shadow.

4th - HK Premier. Immaculate, original car that I put a 350 chev in and promptly lost my licence, so sold it.

I just wish mine was a) originally this tidy, and b) still alive.

It died a death of phonepole interuptus. Had a mate helping me do the diff (again, they were made of cheese) and he forgot to do up the wheel bolts on his side beyond finger tight.

Some ***** had the nerve to honk at the rear passenger side wheel as it rolled through the intersection. I hate both the honker and the mate!

1960 - 12 years old, I bought a Morris Z trayback ute for 5 pounds (in Calamvale). I picked strawberries for months to raise that - I received 6d per one-gallon tin (5 cents/5 litres).

It cost me another fiver for the battery.

Imagine this as a wooden traybacked ute:

My next car, at 15, was a Renault 4CV.

When I was 16 I bought a 1938 Vauxhall Model J 14hp and drove it unlicenced and unregistered from Brisbane to Sydney (in 1964). :)

My next car, at 15, was a Renault 4CV.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/05/15.jpg

When I was 16 I bought a 1938 Vauxhall Model J 14hp and drove it unlicenced and unregistered from Brisbane to Sydney (in 1964). :)

first car was a HG ute two mate and I bought for $150-00 to go fishing in, none of us licensed, I cant remember our ages but around 15 or 16. It had more paint than panels and only got to the fishing spot, both doors fell off, chassis bent so bad the tail shaft was rubbing against the body. Some one did collect it for parts after we left it there as we had no way of getting it back.

second car Ser IIA shorty, I fitted a SIII ute salsbury rear diff and matching front, mongrel job to do I dont recomend it. 186S engine (reason for fitting stronger diffs) sold it on but unfortunately the new owner was not a 4X4 driver and smashed it trying to drive it like a sports car.

third car a 79 two door rangie so modified by the end I couldnt be bothered trying to remember everthing done to it, it is still being driven as a fishing hack in the sand hills of the west coast of South australia

fourth 89 Suzuki Sierra again much modified by the end, lent it to my ex as she needed transport and she sold it on me, knowing I wouldnt put the mother of my children in jail. Did see it some years later with all the good bits removed.

A mid 90s ford sedan for 6 weeks but hated two wheel drives so I traded it in on my current 94 disco. There have been many other cars I have bought and driven but technically they were bought for the other half so they weren't mine.

Apart from the Ford I wish I had never let the others go

Okay, I've had primarily Rangie and Discos and the odd 2WD car here and there so here goes-

1983 JB Camira- Biggest POS on earth and used more oil than fuel :eek: Got me from A to be but only just. Rusted out so it added to the landfill in the end

1976 Rangie- Good first Rangie, bit too rusty for any long term commitment.

1984 Rangie auto- Slug-flite auto but comfy at the time and with a rear maxi-drive (still have that today) it was superb off-road even with 205 Michelins on.

1993 Disco 3.5 V8i- Okay, had LPG and it was a total nightmare. Blew 3 AFM and hoses, mixer kept playing up and the list goes on. Dodgy instilatuion by the previous owner didn't help hence why I ****ed it off. Plus I'm not struck on the Disco styling plus the seats in that model are crap :mad::mad:

1993 Rangie 'Aquarangie'- Best Rangie I've owned. Never broke down, give it a flogging and it kept going even if it did die ungracefully (rolled it 4WDing).

1979 Rangie- Was a project Rangie, but money got real tight so it never eventuated and I sold it off. Still made a few $$$ out of it.

1983 Rangie "Thomas'- Started off well but as the repairs started to mount for **** all gain it was becoming a dead set PIA with the 4.4 fitted it had chronic overhating issues off-road as well. So it got the **** instread of pouring more money into it.

1987 Rangie- Current rig, bar the 'prince of darkness' moment a few weeks ago it's been a good Rangie to date.

1976 Rangie 'Project Sahara'- Picked it up off e-bay for $1000 late last year. Will be a run-around/tow vehicle/ general club trip type vehicle (not extreme stuff, got the 87 Rangie for that).

I have also had 11 other Rangies as wrecks over the years

Licence at 17 but no car until 21. Back then in the 1960s, the only kids who had cars were the ones who had a paddock to drive around.
If I can list the 4wds separately, I only need five to cover all the cars I've owned in 40 years.

Cars
1. 1948 Austin A40 (probably unique in that it didn't use oil and didn't jump out of third gear). Leather font seats. Great vehicle.
2. FC Holden. I believe it was officially called a "Stationette". It was a panel van with all the chrome fittings from the Specials and had been fitted with sliding rear windows and a fold down seat by Canopy Conversions of Annandale.
3. 1969 Toyota Crown. Three speed column shift with electric overdive available on 2nd and 3rd. Brilliant idea. Did almost 300,000 miles or half a million kilometres.
4. 1980 Toyota Corolla.
5. 1988 Toyota Camry.

Four Wheel Drives
1. 1973 LWB Haflinger. 1800mm wheelbase Fantastic vehicle. 643 cc horizontally opposed 2 cyl air cooled engine. 5 gears. Governed to do 7km/h in first (66:1 reduction) 13 in second, 27 in third, 45 in fourth and 70 in top. Difflocks front and back. Easily go places where even Landrovers struggled.
2. 1973 Series III LWB. Served me faithfully for 23 years.
3. 1998 Defender cab/chassis

Motorbikes
1. Honda S90
2. Hodaka 100
3. Honda CL175
4. Maico 125
5. Honda 50
6. Honda SL125

Not a long list for 40 years, but I could never see the point of getting rid of a vehicle that was doing the job OK.

1916-1919 4 cyl. Buicks made into a hybrid from two dragged out of the scrap heap at the back of our Winton depot. Various 1920's junk including a1926 Chev. Capitol ute with only one rear (contracting) brake operational. A 1936 supercharged Auburn boat tail roadster. I paid $90 for this when aged 16 and underage for a licence. Wore out all the six cheap retreads on it, couldn't afford to re-register it, and found even wreckers wouldn't take it. Took off the plate and left it at the side of the road. The bloody thing is worth $200,000+ today. A 1940 Plymouth, good car; a couple of 1946-48 Plymouth/Dodges, again good cars; a type 40 Bugatti, a pia; several A40's, pieces of s**t; couple of Ford Zephyrs, rust buckets, bad front ends, bad gearboxes; 48/215 Holden, good reliable cheap motoring, a ruster; EH Holdens, good, reliable, economical, fast motoring, Bris.-Syd. 10 1/2 to 12hours repeatedly and 28-30mpg; numbers of Valiants AP5 to CM, VC Slant Six best family car ever sold in Oz, the most nearly maintenance free motor cars I ever ran as a fleet manager; Sigmas are the worst car I ever ran in a fleet; then a string of company cars where I drove what I was given. A 1972 Torana LJ bought new and written off by my son in 2004 at genuine 130,000 miles, I hate RACQ Insurance; currently an XH Falcon ute and a 1986 County-Isuzu. Along the way, lots of old motor bikes, four White road Bosses & some Commers etc. Nearly forgot the 1964 MG-B bought new, the jury is still out on whether this was a good, bad, or indifferent car. Got lots of naughties with it, though. And also nearly forgot the pure play cars; 1952-3 Ferrari 212 Export, maintenance intensive, unreliable, but a real hoot when going right; 1969 HT Monaro GTS350 much modified, very quick, reliable, used lotsa fuel; 1970 Dodge Challenger convertible with 426 Hemi and 4 speed, a genuinely super fast car, reliable, used mega-fuel.

I had an ancient Fordson van with a sidevalve engine and 2 transverse leaf springs; one at each end. It used to lean over going around corners. Bought it for one old UK shilling (about 10c). Rebuilt it and drove it to school from age 14 until I passed my driving test at 17. Sold it for GBP10 (about $25) The big ends went the next day.

Oh happy days!

I'm fairly new to the Landrover fold, although I have always liked them ever since seeing the track based Counties that were across the road from where I was working in the mid eighties. I thought they were awsome.

My list of cars are:-

1974 Holden Hq Panel van
This one was cop bait and I was pulled over countless times. Well, I did count till I lost track at 52!

1986 Nissan 720 dual cab
My one and only brand new car. It was red with white lettering and used to put my 'P' plate over the 'N' in nissan on the tailgate .. :). It was costing too much for a young bloke so I sold it after a year..

1984 Suzuki Sierra
Great car,Sold it to get the FB and deposit to buy a house.

1960 Holden Fb
Always liked the Fb holden ... Still have this car after 19years :)

1964 Holden Eh wagon
A great car

1985 Toyota FourRunner
A bit Lemony .... sold after a year..

1991 Nissan Pathfinder
One of the best cars I've owned and still have.. Have done many outback
trips in this one..

1975 LandRover FC101
Ahh, the 101, what can I say .. its an awsome machine :) :)
Learning heaps .. fixing a few teething problems with it :)

Cheers

1st car - FX holden ute, back in 64. Drove it all over the Watagans back then.

1st 4x4 - swb FJ40 landcruiser. Can't remember the year. Rolled off a mountain in Barrington Tops one midnight.

1st rover 4x4 - Rangie (1st model rangie bought to Aus). Can't remember the year. Had over 250,000 miles on it when sold and never let me down or had to have any major parts.

Since then have only had rangie 4x4's until current disco (still have 2 rangie projects).

Biggest vehicle regrets:

Not getting a series landie in the early days, when I was keen on them.

Missing out twice on 110 isuzu traybacks. When I missed these, I got something else, now making a rangie trayback with 4BD1-T.
