OK

What are you going to do with it? Serious offroader or a restoration job?

Wow, its got a hand throttle, thats soo cool, never seen one before. Should be a good buildup although all those pics loading on the one page every time you open it will eventually become a pain and mega bandwidth waster.

I'll cut the pics back a little hey :)

Its a back to as cloes to original as possible, so it won't be a hardcore 38" tyre shod monster truc, that might come with the next project ;)

All the Series 1/2/2a Landrovers I've owned have been fitted with hand throttles when I got them, as have most others I have seen. In my experience they are not uncommon at all.

I gave up waiting for the page to load - we don't all have broadband, or even good dialup.

For real? A family friend has a 2A, been in it a million times and I cant recall ever seeing one in it.

srowlandson, are you gonna keep the original engine or put something else in it?

Managed to get the roof off by unbolting the back wall and undoing the wndscreen butterfly nuts. The Roof is now off

The floor is now completely out, havng to unbolt the clutch and brake pedals. Unfortunately the brake line won’t unbolt frmo the master cylinder

I have undone the bolts mounting the back wall to the chassis, 3 stubborn bolts hold it in place.

More unbolting of the radiator surround has it about 80% out

More Sanding today on the doors and the firewall. The door skin on the drivers side was particularly bad having a strip of fibre glass in the bottom section to badly cover a rotten door skin. It might be easier to replace the ddoor skin here. The Firewall was wire brushed to expose some rust sections. Looks like a replacement panel will need to be ordered for here and mig welded in place.I spent a good hour wirebrushing the chassis and other components to get rid of the dust dirt and grime ready for the chassis blacck paint to go on. A new tool joined the shed from Super Cheap Auto, taking advantage of their 20% off sale. I picked up a Die grinder which will be of great assistance when i start the welding of the panels etc.

the roof has about 5mm of filler over it , its taking its time to be stripped back so I can attempt to get the roof repaired.

indeed.

I had a mate over who worked out how we can fix the rust holes in the chassis.

I have the tray designed and will order the steel soon.

Brakes will be the next focus, going to replace the whole lot to be safe.

i was going to rebuild the whole of the steering but I think i'll just try get it on the road for now and look at that as a mini project down the track.

Can't wait to get some paint on it and the body back together.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/08/274.jpgThe roof has large amounts of bog, the worse being 7mm deep at the back where something has dented the roof. Most of the dints are easily repaired so who knows why you would bother bogging it ?

I have pulled the door handle mechanisms apart and cleaned them up, at the moment they are in primer ready for some colour.

Good stuff mate!

Don't forget to use aluminum friendly stripper and primer... Ordinary paint stripper will cause the panels to go brittle and non aluminum primer will cause the paint to oxidize really badly after a few years.. (this is what the previous owner of my 2a did.. and why I'm having to line up another respray...)

You site is great.. and I've bookmarked it :)

got the bonnet in Etch Primer :D also primer on the seat box.

Engine & Rad are out, and ready for stripping down for inspection and then rebuild if required otherwise a freshen up. Will undo all the brake lines tomorrow with the new Snap on Brake spanners I picked up.

I also have to continue to strip and sand the paint off all the panels ready for primer. The chassis is getting a good clean too with CT18 and the pressure asher ready for some wire brush and sander action before getting some chassis black paint.

It is a long slow process. Can't wait to get cracking on the motor as its something that is less noisy and can be done later into the night without the neighbours complaining.

I'll post some more photos tomorrow

one door all in primer, air vents, door hinges, back wall in and out, dash all in first coat of primer.

Started welding up the chassis that is cracked and corroded. Rust proofed the inside of the chassis with some Staun 329 I had. plenty of wire brush action on the chassis to clean it up and sanding to removed the rust and scale.

Picked up some material from a mate to make a work bench which would be good and am looking at a small sandblasting booth to use to clean up the small and fiddly pieces.

Decided to paint the car the cream / white colour. My Uncle's LWB tray back was this colour and I always liked the look of it.

Hoping to get the cabin back together soon so we can start on the brakes and engine rebuild to get it going (and stopping again!) soon. The 2 month delay in doing anything was a combination of getting married / honeymoon and having no access to a compressor!

i have the half cab painted in primer now and have started on some of theother bits and pieces that need to be black. the seat box covers are all in primer, ready to mount.

I am going to throw the body back together then give the whole body a few top coats and get it on the road with the spare motor i have, all i need to do to get to that stage is new brake lines , master clyinder, new clutch, mount engine and build the body, so roughly 6 weeks work. I want it registered and on the road to then rebuild the motor and start mini projects of rebuilding things like steering , suspension etc.

Tray i am in 2 minds, building a steel one from 40 x 40mm or just knock up the original looking wooden one with 70x 40 treated pine with a hardwood deck. i reckon the wood might be the better option.

The old complaining nieghbours, one must always consider them before firing up the angle grinder early on a Sunday morning, I prefer to just hand sand my panels with a plasterers sanding block, use the old palm for the more hard to get at stuff, someone told me once on this site, its only a landy dents and all, forget the bog and crack out the house paint! some sense to it I guess, oil based enamel with a spalsh of 2k hardener is not bad, you are doing well, sounds like when you are finished Super Cheap will go bust!!!

Steve, hows the jigger going these days?

Well, most of my time has been on the Tray. I started to weld it up with my $99 Ryobi ARC. Poor old thing has no fan and a thermo cut out that cuts the welder off every 3-5 mins of welding and needs 20 mins to cool. Very frustrating.

I took the plunge and picked up a New welder. CIG Weldskill ARC + Tig. Great tool.
http://gallery.me.com/srowlandson/100266/IMGP9878.jpg'derivative=medium&source=web.jpg&type=medium&ver=12291527700001

This made the task easy, but i needed to brush up on my arc skills and also learn to Tig. So, whilst standing and pondering what i should do, my legs got tired. So I built a stool to sit at the bench and ponder... much more comfortable.
http://gallery.me.com/srowlandson/100266/IMGP9859/web.jpg

Now the timber on the stool is the timber i scored (Free :) ) for the tray.. Its Spotted Gum. 136mm wide, 30mm thick boards. Nice

Tray is coming along...
http://gallery.me.com/srowlandson/100266/IMGP9867.jpg'derivative=medium&source=web.jpg&type=medium&ver=12291527650001

By far the hardest is the hinges getting them square etc, i am not as precise enough or patient enough to get it spot on!

I am in the process now of grinding the welds back, going over with the tig the dodgy arc welds i did to make sure they are ok. I bought a full face grinding mask, as a few months ago i got a piece of metal in my eye even though i had safety glasses on, its a good bit of kit.

http://gallery.me.com/srowlandson/100266/IMGP9877/web.jpg

These make short work on the grinding... Flap discs by the dozen :)

I scored some 136 x 30mm Spotted Gum boards. Cut them down today and started the long process of drilling and screwing down :(

Once done, I'll have to pull it all out, paint the frame of the tray Black and Oil the deck.

I reckon its looking good too!

I'm not sure if I would squeeze it together too tight though. When the wood picks up moisture from rain, humidity etc it swells particularly across the grain (across the deck as you've done it) and it may buckle or burst up.

my free timber was the last 14 pieces of about 150... they aren't the best... so a few were buckled i had to straighten, they were about 5-6 mm apart at one end :o

tray is all done, relpaced all the wheel bearings and brake wheel cylinders. so now the brakes from master cyl to wheel cylinder is all new.

Still need tierods, paint, door tops, wiper, new windscreen
window rubbers for roadworthy

have to fit some tyres i got and also finish the wiring, these are my next 2 jobs as they are essentially 'no cost' jobs.

My only 'project' now is a pair of 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot's :D

Sometimes life can be like that unfortunately. At least you can take solace in the fact that the work you've done has become a great starting off point for someone else. I know I certainly wouldn't mind being in the new owner's shoes if I had the time and money for a new project. :)
