View Full Version : D110 - Speaker upgrades

G'day Guys,
A bit of foward planning here, I know the D110 speakers in the AC trims are 4" but they are in such a bad position- anyone done anything about this?
I dont really want to go down the complete front door build to fit 6" splits but want some better sounds.
Also where have people put the rear speakers? and what speakers?
I used to be into the Sound off scene years ago - so have plenty of good head units and amps etc and know how to build good sound off equipement, used to run only Infinity speakers way before the duff duff boys took over :D
Cheers

I modified some 6x9 speaker boxes to fit in the rear.
As for the front I only replaced the factories for something a little better. Not much room elsewhere.

i reckon you can consider looking up instead of the traditional locations :)
planning on a roof console install myself with 5 or 6 inch splits mounted across the top of the windscreen...

Yes up is another alternative. I was thinking of mounting in some speakers in the roof console but then stopped when the thought of taking the console down to cut holes in it remembering how much fun I had trying to install it in the first place.
But up is probably the way to go.

Have a look at this link, might give you some ideas. Alex has fitted several of my car sound systems. He is in Brisbane though

I had a couple of three-way speaker boxes mounted on brackets directly to the roof lining above the little windows either side the rear door, plus a couple of circular tweeters (About 75mm across, if that) mounted on top of the dash in the corners - all Pioneer units, plus a new CD player (whose name scapes me at the moment) to drive it all, for reasonable sound - not much point goging for a really flash setup with all the other ambient noise in a 'fender ! Only issues so far is having to fade a bit to the rear speakers means the tweeters don't get blown at higher volumes, but otherwise I'm happy, for about $250 all up, as I recall. Not at home, so no pictures unfortunately...

Are the defender speakers in the same place as the county ones?
I bought some 5" 2 way jaycar speakers. The magnets are HUGE and just fit inside the holes for the 4" speakers. I made a couple of rings out of MDF to mount the speakers - the mdf ring screws to the old speaker mounts, and the speaker screws to the MDF. The pass. side ring needed to be a bit thicker to clear the wiper motor.
The speakers are still in the same place and angle, but they are more than loud enough, sound quality is good, and they have not interfered with legroom (I am 6'3" and have plenty of leg room sitting on either side).

Don't La'salle make a rigid roof liner for Defenders with speaker pods at each corner?
I know they do one with a radio slot in to mount the head unit above the wind sheild....I'm pretty certain it comes with 4" speaker pods too.
Perhaps La'Salle hasn't hit your shores yet?

This is what I was thinking - any pix? how did you mount them?
I seem to remember certain high end Dedenders - say the XS or limited edition ones had speakers up there. Maybe the new D110 has something we can use?

I just bought some jbl 6x9 speakers in speaker boxes then bent some sheet into L brackets and mounted to cargo barrier. I also switched the 4 inch int he front for JBL's and they made a huge difference,
the speakers are ,ounted top corners of the cargo barrier with 3 bolts and locknuts. they survived three weeks of cape york corrugations and lots of tuff trips with no issues and much better sound

I'm in the process now, I have bought a pair of splits and have made a speaker box that goes across the top of the cargo bay just behind the cargo barrier. It is cut up towards the roof through the middle so it doesn't interfere with rear veiw. I have ordered a spare set of top cargo barrier brackets so I can mount the box between the existing cargo barrier mounts and the new ones which will be further back.
While on the subject, will a CD player mount in the defender and work?
I believe they have to be pretty level, how do you achieve that when the original is at about 48deg.?

WOW Sight & Sound have some pre formed plastic speaker boxes of a few different shapes that will screw directly on to the roof liner. Didn't check to see if any would suit the defender but im sure they will have something.

I just bought some jbl 6x9 speakers in speaker boxes then bent some sheet into L brackets and mounted to cargo barrier. I also switched the 4 inch int he front for JBL's and they made a huge difference,
Quick question:
Were the JBL's a direct swap for the existing speakers? That would be very handy.
Re the angle of the CD player:
When I was living in Alice I had a very cheap non-brand name header CD unit, and it skipped a lot. Since then I've relocated to Melbourne and put in a better quality kenwood unit (not a fantastic one, just the base spec that could read MP3 on CD) and its been great. Very little skipping, even offroad...
As far as the location of the additional speakers, I didnt want to put them in the extreme back, as I'm try to isolate that area from the cabin (its the 2 door panel van remember) to cut down on noise. I'm actually putting them in the B pillar.. there is a surprising amount of gap there under where I would imagine the trim panel would be.
I say imagine, because we dont have trim panels on the hardtops.. because, real men drive them :D
cheers

Basically got some foam and carboard and made a template to shape to go acoss on an angle from just inside the rear door to the side. Once template made to allow for bumps in roof. Cut out shape of front, cut triangle base of ply. Attached front to base, made two supporting pieces to follow sides of triangle and attached. Cut out speaker hole, covered with carpet. Got a length of 20mm angle aluminium, slotted and bent at right angles to size of box and cut. Removed trim from around windows (plastic) tacked angle to box and held up to ensure a fit, marked on roof rails at edge. Drilled holes in angle and rail, drilled holes from bottom of angle to box, mounted andgle to roof rail. Covered internal of box with carpet for accoustics, mounted box to angle, mounted speakers. Cut trim to suit and replaced. As my first go speakers where facing down there is a gap in the trim for version 2, but will fill with some sort of foam rubber. Will see if I can get some pics when I get back home on Tuesday.

6x9's are ghey:wasntme:
just replace the front 4's with quality 4'' splits,(ive got 4'' alpine splits, crossovers fit behind the cd player, tweeters come up through the demist vents.) and the rears can fit 6-6.5'' speakers easy! ( i run 6.5'' clarion carbon splits, again all the crossover bull**** fits behind the speaker covers.) then i run 2x 10'' pioneer subs in my sub box shelf thingy and 1 400w rms amp, just for the subs. the head unit has enough power for the rest. the OE wiring is good enough no need to change it.
sound quality is excalent! but still packs a punch when metalica etc is selected.

I recently fitted a pioner CD, in place of the factory radio. Does not skip even in the bush. Suprised me because everything rattles like buggery on the dash.

I've seen some platic speaker mounts which go over the rear quarters where the panel too access your rear tail lights are. Turned up on eBay a while back, looked OEM, but I can't recall ever bothering to look in a Defender to see if they had anything in the rear.
It's something I'm abpout to look at too though, and I like the idea of speker boxes there. That, plus an amp in the drivers seatbox, I think.

the jbl 4 inch's go straight in and with the 6x9's uphigh they are clear of any gear when the car is pakced for the bush.
Put it this was i can hear my stereo over the defender, roof rack ,corrugations and my simex's!!
Made the biggest difference with the 6x9's in the back.

pretty sure alot of good head units can cope with bad angles we have a head unit and its not good at all, in our old defender that didn't even have a radio mount in it we put one in to hold the head unit and that is at an angle and copes real well
maybe ask someone with an old classic rangie as i think there radio mounts are at a really servere angle (although i could be wrong about that)

What are the boxes in the centre bit?
I went to Strathfield Car Radio yesterday to look at speakers and was bamboozled by the kit and the language. I suddenly felt old. Today I think I'll look at Supercheap where you can look for hours without being asked "Can I help you."

Yeah the headlining is sagging but between the cargo barrier and other fastening points I do not consider it a high priority.
The green boxes in the centre section are the splitter boxes that seperate the signal so base goes to the woofers and treble goes to the tweeters. When I get a better stereo I'll buy two good 4" speakers for the front and hopefully they'll give good mid range but it is sounding much better than standard as is. The "splits" are a set by Fusion bought from WOW at Coffs H they cost $89.00.
Steve.
