As far as I know there isn't a thread on the cable outer itself.
The speedo cable is held in place with a small retaining plate, and the plate is bolted to the gearbox.
I'll see if there is anything in rave.

Well, when I get round to replacing my speedo drive at the gearbox, I'll happily measure the thread for you...but it may not be for a couple of weeks, which probably won't help.

Looking at RAVE - it seems there is a retaining plate - not a direct threaded connection.

having had the b/box and t/case out (and the t/case is still sitting on a trolley as I write this) yes, it's just a retaining plate that holds the collar on the drive cable to the 'box.

thanks guy (I remember that now)
I thought I was going to have to look myself at the weekend
I didn't want to lie on the ground, it's cold and damp here you know :p
only probelm now is VDO don't do any like that :( (bloody LR)
any idea if the speedo end is threded? (in hindsight the pulse generator would be safer at that end anyway)
thanks

Didn't take too much notice of the cable as I didn't fit it in the end, but I think it's just a push fit clip over the back of the gauge.

Can't you fit a 'command type' cruise control where you fit the sensor to the prob shaft - easy job.
I fitted one to my wifes falcon - some years ago, never failed.
